The blossoming of Western Culture began 2,500 years ago in Attica, in a small Greek state, and especially in its capital, Athens. But at the beginning of the 5th century BC Athens almost disappeared.
The Acropolis, one of the most famous historical sights of the world, was in ancient Greece the religious and political center of the city. But in 480 BC. the buildings of the Acropolis were completely destroyed.
Athens was overwhelmed by an army of some 300,000 Thousand Persians, who invaded the city, under the leadership of the terrible and eminent King Xerxes I.
