The story behind the next piece is very simple. Early 20th century, Italy, a small town by the sea. Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninov and his family spend their vacation at the dacha. And almost every day, to the house of Rachmaninov, and to the houses located nearby, a young, I want to believe, charming Italian woman comes, who leads a donkey on a string. And the donkey is loaded with a small mechanical piano.

The girl stops, a crowd of onlookers gathers around her.

Then she turns on the piano and begins to sing and dance to the sounds of a cheerful polka.

Returning to Russia, Sergei Vasilyevich processed this unpretentious, but so beloved melody.

He often performed it on the piano in 4 hands with his wife and even transposed the polka for a brass band.
