Fashion and lifestyle content creator Alanna Doherty shares the smallest, and most labor-intensive, room in her colorful photography studio Groovy House in Hove, near Brighton, England. Despite its size, the kitchen took a full four months to design and renovate, largely because Alanna refused to bring in outside help. Determined to save money on her studio buildout, she taught herself to tile entirely from YouTube tutorials, then spent weeks tiling the cabinets, counters, and open shelving by hand — right down to a final all-night session that ran until 2am on the morning of the studio's launch.

The kitchen was designed to feel playful rather than sophisticated, in contrast to the more considered color stories in the rest of the house. Scalloped shelf edges, cut and shaped entirely by hand using a small cup as a stencil, display an ever-changing rotation of trinkets: a chocolate box too cute to put away, tea for guests, and a curved dish from a small brand called Spice and Wood chosen for its wave-like shape, echoing the curved motifs found throughout the studio's branding. An outdated industrial sink was ripped out and replaced with a curved ceramic basin and a brass faucet, both essential, in Alanna's words, to keep the space from feeling like an afterthought next to the color and character of every other room.

A bright orange espresso machine adds a jolt of color while serving guests who come to shoot in the space, and custom-made curtains from a brand called Colours of Arlene, created in Groovy House's signature orange and pink, hide the plumbing and utility elements underneath the counter, keeping the room camera-ready at all times. The kitchen functions as what Alanna calls a "soup kitchen" — just enough for coffee and light hosting — but was designed above all to be swappable and styleable, so that any client shooting a coffee machine, a set of mugs, or kitchen product can slot their items in seamlessly, as though the space were built around them.
