Inside a hidden mastaba at Meidum, Auguste Mariette's workmen uncovered two seated statues so real that torchlight in their quartz-inlaid eyes made the men flee, convinced the figures had come alive.

Meet Prince Rahotep, son of King Sneferu and High Priest of Ra at Heliopolis, and his wife Nofret, "Known to the King."

Carved in painted limestone over 4,600 years ago, this is one of the best-preserved pairs of statues from Egypt's Old Kingdom — and among the most iconic pieces in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo.
