Faith: Hi John! We received a message from an English learner about her birthday.
John: Let’s give her some feedback.
Faith: Here is what Farhana told us about her birthday:
Voiceover: “My birthday was on last 23 march. ... In my birthday no one wished me except my younger sister. I spent my whole day as like it is a normal day.”
Faith: We suggest changing the first sentence to the present tense to say when your birthday is. “My birthday is March 23rd.”
John: In American English, the usual order for dates is month, day, and year. So instead of “23 March,” Americans usually say “March 23.”
John: Next Farhana wrote this: “In my birthday no one wished me except my younger sister.”
We can change the word order of this sentence to make it clearer. “No one wished me happy birthday, except my younger sister.”
Faith: Farhana’s next sentence is: “I spent my whole day as like it is a normal day.” We suggest these changes: “As” and “like” are both used to make comparisons between nouns. “As” is an adverb, and “like” is a preposition. We only need one of these to make the comparison. Farhana could say: “I spent my whole day like it was a normal day.”
John: Let’s review our changes to Farhana’s message: “My birthday is March 23. ... No one wished me happy birthday except my younger sister. I spent my whole day like it was a normal day.”
Faith: Thanks for sending us your birthday message, Farhana! And that’s Everyday Grammar TV.
