Hi my name is Fred Mergen from Mergen Mixed Martial Arts and I'm going to be speaking about how to prepare for MMA training.

The first thing you want to do obviously is find a good MMA school or a training location, facility, gym, where ever it is make sure they teach multiple things. MMA consists of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, boxing or kickboxing, Muay Thai, wrestling, its a mixed martial art.

And then in martial arts that means Karate, so it's a bunch of Karates or martial arts put together and that's how you get the mixed martial arts.

Make sure you get plenty of rest, drink plenty of water, and call to make sure you have the right times and to see if you can get a uniform or what uniform is required because you usually need a couple of different uniforms. If you are doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu you're going to need a Jiu Jitsu uniform, if you're doing boxing or kickboxing you definitely don't want to wear the Jiu Jitsu uniform because you'll probably last about ten seconds. If you need gloves, do you need wraps, do you need head gear, shin guards, a mouth piece, cup... so you want to make sure you get all of the proper information before you get into the school.

Well if you are worried about getting hurt you want to make sure you go light. I know at my school and my gym when the fighters are training with somebody who's brand new they're going to give back exactly what they are given. So if you hit them hard, they're going to hit you hard. Try and see what the rules are with the instructor or the Coach, see how they run their program.

If you don't want to get hurt make sure you have all the proper gear, get plenty of water, plenty of rest and just take it easy, take it easy.

How do you know if you are ready for a fight or the shape you need to be in? Well I'm going to tell you this, I usually make that decision for the fighters. Look to your coach or your instructor and they'll let you know when you're ready. But don't be afraid to ask them "hey coach, am I ready do you think?" communication is the most important thing.

For an MMA school look for the type of schedule you are looking for, flexibility, make sure they have plenty of sparring partners and other people who are training too because you don't want to be the only one fighting, fighting yourself or rather hitting the bag the whole time. You want to make sure there are plenty of people there. Make sure the program is something you want to do. Look them up, do some research. You don't want to go to a Taekwondo school to learn MMA. Or go to a Judo school and learn MMA even though Judo is really good. You want to make sure you go to an MMA specific school that's going to teach you MMA.
