Top 10 Most Popular Hollywood Movies In 2017

2017 saw a series of blockbuster movies in many genres, in which the action and superhero movie genres still dominate because they are loved by many audiences.

In this article, we will introduce the top 10 most popular movies by audiences in 2017.

1. Get Out

Get Out is a 2017 American psychological horror film written, co-produced, and directed by Jordan Peele in his directorial debut. It stars Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Lil Rel Howery, LaKeith Stanfield, Bradley Whitford, Caleb Landry Jones, Stephen Root, and Catherine Keener.

Get Out premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 23, 2017, and was theatrically released in the United States on February 24, 2017, by Universal Pictures. The film received critical acclaim for its screenplay, direction, acting, and social critiques. It was a major commercial success, grossing $255 million worldwide on a $4.5 million budget, with a net profit of $124.3 million, making it the tenth-most profitable film of 2017.

It was chosen by the National Board of Review, the American Film Institute, and Time as one of the top ten films of the year. Peele won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay at the 90th Academy Awards, with additional nominations for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor (Kaluuya). It also earned five nominations at the 23rd Critics' Choice Awards, two at the 75th Golden Globe Awards and two at the 71st British Academy Film Awards. Get Out has been cited by critics as one of the best films of the 21st century.

Since its launch at the end of February this year, Get Out has made a deep impression on the world audience. 'Jordan Peele's film as a ''punch'' on racism still exists in contemporary American society.' Through the exquisite acting of actors Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams... Along with the excellent direction of Jordan Peele on the background of a deep script, Get Out has contributed to changing the mindset of how to make horror films.

Get Out can be seen as the flagship of this year's horror movie line. Compared to my friends it is Mother! Also praised by experts, Get Out still holds a unique position, not only for its film series but also for other films.

2. Dunkirk

Dunkirk is a 2017 historical war thriller film written, directed and produced by Christopher Nolan that depicts the Dunkirk evacuation of World War II from the perspectives of the land, sea and air. It was produced by Nolan and Emma Thomas. Its ensemble cast includes Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, Harry Styles in his film debut, Aneurin Barnard, James D'Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance and Tom Hardy.

The film received various accolades, including eight nominations at the 90th Academy Awards: Best Picture and Best Director (Nolan's first directing Oscar nomination); it went on to win for Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Film Editing.

This year, Christopher Nolan continues to polish his name in Hollywood with a World War II-themed work called Dunkirk. The work is a heroic, bloody epic about the escape of more than 400,000 British soldiers and allied troops on the coast of Dunkirk against the pursuit of Nazi Germany. Although this is Christopher Nolan's first time making a war film, his work is as excellent as many previous films.

The breakthrough in filming, creativity in the art of storytelling along with outstanding vision have helped Dunkirk win the hearts of viewers. However, the work divided American and European critics. 'Specifically, the French newspaper criticized the film for having a ''un Polite attitude'' with the role of the French army in this important military event and said that Dunkirk focused on depicting British soldiers, but forgot other forces throughout the famous evacuation.' 'Overcoming this ''scandal'', Dunkirk is still wide on the way to this year's Oscar.'

3. The Big Sick

The Big Sick is a 2017 American romantic comedy film directed by Michael Showalter and written by Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani. It stars Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter, Ray Romano, Adeel Akhtar, and Anupam Kher. Gordon and Nanjiani wrote the film based on their relationship; it follows an interracial couple who must deal with cultural differences after Emily (Kazan) becomes ill.

The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2017. It began a limited theatrical release on June 23, 2017, by Amazon Studios and Lionsgate. One of the most acclaimed films of 2017, it was chosen by American Film Institute as one of the top 10 films of the year and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. With a budget of $5 million, it grossed $56 million worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing independent films of 2017.

Amazon this year continues to make viewers vibrate with a work about love, the loss called The Big Sick after Manchester by the Sea last year. Director Michael Showalter's work tells the story of a bitter, bitter love between Pakistani-Muslim Kumail Nanjiani (Kumail Nanjiani) and American-born lover Emily (Zoe Kazan).

'The work, which is rated ''funny, sincere and smart'' by Rotten Tomatoes about love, made a splash at this year's Sundance Film Festival.' It can be seen that this is a stepping stone for The Big Sick to get closer to the 90th Oscars.

4. Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman is a superheroine created by the American psychologist and writer William Moulton Marston.

Wonder Woman appears in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character is a founding member of the Justice League. The character first appeared in All Star Comics #8 published October 21, 1941 with her first feature in Sensation Comics #1 in January 1942. The Wonder Woman title has been published by DC Comics almost continuously ever since.

Wonder Woman has been featured in various media from radio to television and film, and appears in merchandise sold around the world, such as apparel, toys, dolls, jewelry, and video games. Shannon Farnon, Susan Eisenberg, Maggie Q, Lucy Lawless, Keri Russell, Rosario Dawson, Cobie Smulders, Rachel Kimsey and Stana Katic among others, have provided the character's voice for animated adaptations. Wonder Woman has been depicted in both film and television by Linda Harrison, Cathy Lee Crosby, Lynda Carter, Megan Gale, Adrianne Palicki and in the DC Extended Universe films by Gal Gadot.

This year, the issue of feminism in cinema is high. Among the outstanding films on that issue, there is Wonder Woman (Vietnamese title: Warrior Goddess) by director Patty Jenkins. The warrior goddess follows Amazon princess Diana (Gal Gadot) to penetrate the human world, except for tyranny with the desire to bring peace to humanity.

'The work has contributed to polishing the name of ''rose with thorns'' Gal Gadot on the silver screen, and at the same time helped female director Patty Jenkins have a more worthy place in the filmmaking world.'

5. Lady Bird

Lady Bird is a 2017 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film written and directed by Greta Gerwig in her solo directorial debut. The film tells the story of a high school senior and her strained relationship with her mother. It stars Saoirse Ronan in the title role with Laurie Metcalf, Tracy Letts, Lucas Hedges, Timothée Chalamet, Beanie Feldstein, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Lois Smith in supporting roles.

Lady Bird was chosen by the National Board of Review, the American Film Institute, and Time magazine as one of the top ten films of 2017. At the 90th Academy Awards, it earned five nominations: Best Picture, Best Actress (for Ronan), Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director. At the 75th Golden Globe Awards, the film won two awards—Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy (for Ronan)—and was nominated for two others. It was also nominated for three British Academy Film Awards.

Although A24 does not release regularly, the works that this studio produces are mostly appreciated by experts, and Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird this year is the case. The film is sometimes exciting, sometimes quiet in her adolescence, nicknamed Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan).

Lady Bird owns a delicate and in-depth script, so since its release in the US, the work has made the professional world ''in love'' alone.'

6. Logan

Logan is a 2017 American superhero film starring Hugh Jackman as the titular character. It is the tenth film in the X-Men film series and the third and final installment in the Wolverine trilogy following X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and The Wolverine (2013). The film, which takes inspiration from the "Old Man Logan" comics storyline by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, follows an aged Wolverine and an extremely ill Charles Xavier who must defend a young mutant named Laura from the Reavers led by Donald Pierce and Zander Rice. The film is produced by 20th Century Fox, Marvel Entertainment, TSG Entertainment and The Donners' Company, and distributed by 20th Century Fox. It is directed by James Mangold, who co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Green and Scott Frank, from a story by Mangold. In addition to Jackman, the film also stars Patrick Stewart, Richard E. Grant, Boyd Holbrook, Stephen Merchant, and introduces Dafne Keen in her film debut as Laura.

Logan premiered at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival on February 17, 2017, and was theatrically released in the United States on March 3, 2017. The film received critical acclaim, with strong praise for its emotional depth, Mangold's direction, action sequences, screenplay, uncompromising tone, thematic profundity, and the performances of Jackman, Keen and Stewart. It became the best-reviewed film in the X-Men franchise, with many critics calling it one of the greatest superhero films ever made, and it was selected by the National Board of Review as one of the top ten films of 2017. It was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 90th Academy Awards, becoming the first live-action superhero film to be nominated for screenwriting. It grossed $619.2 million worldwide and became the third-highest-grossing R-rated film at the time of its release.

Director James Mangold's action and fiction work is considered a perfect, deep goodbye to the old generation of mutants, opening a new era for the young generation of mutants. The delicate acting of actor Hugh Jackman (as Logan) or the indifference and innocence of child actor Dafne Keen (as Laura) breathed life into each frame, contributing to making the work have a certain depth, not just punching, kicking, gore.

In the race for the best film of the year at the Oscars, films made with mutant themes are rare. But in the reviews of experts, some people also hope that this work will be named this year.

7. Baby Driver

Baby Driver is a 2017 action film written and directed by Edgar Wright. It stars Ansel Elgort as a getaway driver seeking freedom from a life of crime with his girlfriend Debora (Lily James). Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, Eiza González, Jamie Foxx, and Jon Bernthal appear in supporting roles.

Baby Driver premiered at the South by Southwest festival on March 11, 2017, followed by releases in North America and the United Kingdom on June 28. It was acclaimed for its craftsmanship and acting, though the characterization and screenwriting drew some criticism. The National Board of Review selected Baby Driver as one of the top films of the year. It earned $226 million globally, bolstered by positive word-of-mouth support and flagging interest in blockbuster franchises. Baby Driver was nominated for numerous awards, including three Academy Awards, two BAFTA Film Awards, two Critics' Choice Awards, and a Golden Globe Award, and won several other honors, chiefly for technical achievement.

The film tells the uncertain journey of a young driver with the nickname Baby (Ansel Elgort) when joining a gang of bank robbers under the control of tycoon Doc (Kevin Spacey). Although the content is quite simple, the ingenuity in the script, top-notch filming techniques as well as excellent music... have helped Edgar Wright's work score points in the hearts of the audience. The film is predicted by many professional writers to be included in the list of Best Picture nominations at the 90th Oscars.

8. Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a 2017 American epic space opera film written and directed by Rian Johnson. Produced by Lucasfilm and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the second installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, following The Force Awakens (2015), and the eighth episode of the nine-part "Skywalker saga". The film's ensemble cast includes Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern, and Benicio del Toro. The Last Jedi follows Rey as she seeks the aid of Luke Skywalker in hopes of turning the tide for the Resistance in the fight against Kylo Ren and the First Order while General Leia Organa, Finn, and Poe Dameron attempt to escape a First Order attack on the dwindling Resistance fleet.

The Last Jedi premiered in Los Angeles on December 9, 2017, and was released in the United States on December 15. It grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2017 and the ninth-highest-grossing film of all time by the time its theatrical run was over. It is also the second-highest-grossing Star Wars film and turned a net profit of over $417 million. The film was well received by critics and received four nominations at the 90th Academy Awards, including Best Original Score and Best Visual Effects, as well as two nominations at the 71st British Academy Film Awards.

Part 8 of this heroic epic continues to trace the Resistance against the growing dictatorship of the First Empire in the galaxy. For many critics, the work is the perfect greeting for older generations, continuing to write new pages of history about the war to protect peace. With a duration of more than 2 hours, the brainchild of director Rian Johnson did the best of what a science fiction film expected.

Owning a cast of bright stars in Hollywood such as Daisy Ridley, Domhnall Gleeson, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Benicio Del Toro... along with a delicate script, masterful techniques have helped the film continue to promote the intense vitality of Star Wars in contemporary American life. 'The film is expected to continue to stir up the world box office before ''docking'' in the Chinese film market.'

9. Thor: Ragnarok

Thor: Ragnarok is a 2017 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Thor, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is the sequel to Thor (2011) and Thor: The Dark World (2013), and is the 17th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was directed by Taika Waititi from a screenplay by Eric Pearson and the writing team of Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost, and stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor alongside Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo, and Anthony Hopkins.

Thor: Ragnarok premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on October 10, 2017, and was released in the United States on November 3, as part of Phase Three of the MCU. The film received praise for its acting and Waititi's direction, as well as the action sequences, visual effects, musical score, and humor, with many critics considering it to be the best installment of the Thor franchise. It grossed $855 million, becoming the highest-grossing film of the series and the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2017.

'Sometimes Marvel often ''changes'' a film brand by renewing the spirit of that movie brand, Thor: Ragnarok is the case.' Director Taika Waititi's work follows the brothers Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) against the expansion of power of his sister Hela (Cate Blanchett), protecting the Asgard people. However, the work is not heavy and gloomy, but in return for the spirit of humor and comfort for the viewer.

As of now, Thor: Ragnarok has a global gross of over $841 million, the highest of the three films. Not only successful at the box office, Thor: Ragnarok is also popular with the audience.

10. War for the Planet of the Apes

War for the Planet of the Apes is a 2017 American science fiction action film directed by Matt Reeves from a screenplay by Reeves and Mark Bomback, and produced by Peter Chernin, Dylan Clark, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. It is the sequel to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) and the third installment in the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise. It stars Andy Serkis as Caesar, alongside Woody Harrelson and Steve Zahn.

War for the Planet of the Apes premiered on July 10, 2017 at the SVA Theatre in New York City, and was theatrically released worldwide by 20th Century Fox on July 14. The film received critical acclaim, with praise for Reeves' direction, Serkis' performance, visual effects, themes, emotional weight, Michael Giacchino's score, and Michael Seresin's cinematographer. War for the Planet of the Apes was a commercial success, grossing over $490 million, and received numerous awards and nominations, including nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Special Visual Effects at the 90th Academy Awards and 71st British Academy Film Awards, respectively.

Season 3 of the Planet of the Apes series far surpasses the previous two according to many critics. In the work, director Matt Reeves skillfully deepened the contradiction between monkeys and humans, thereby generalizing the macro issues of species and the future of humanity.

The actor's acting elements are fully exploited in this film, especially through the two monkey characters leader Caesar (Andy Serkis) and the colonel (Woody Harrelson). Not only that, the technical elements in the film are also highly appreciated. Overall, War for the Planet of the Apes is an emotional greeting to the whole series.
