Supreme Court Denies Alaska’s Bid to Revive Copper and Gold Pebble Mine Proposal Blocked by EPA

WASHINGTON (NEWSnet/AP) — U.S. Supreme Court on Monday rejected Alaska’s bid to revive a proposed copper and gold mine that was blocked by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Justices did not comment in rejecting the state’s attempt to sue the Biden administration directly over its desire to revive the proposed Pebble Mine in the state’s Bristol Bay region.

A year ago, EPA stopped the mine proposal, citing concerns with potential impact on a rich aquatic ecosystem that supports the world’s largest sockeye salmon factory.

States are allowed to sue each other and the federal government in Supreme Court, although justices typically deal with appeals and hear only a few cases each year.

Alaska can try to reverse the decision through a more typical process, starting in a lower court and appealing unfavorable decisions to the Supreme Court.
