Former Trump advisor Steve Bannon will serve his four-month prison sentence at a facility in Danbury, Connecticut, rather than a minimum-security prison camp typically reserved for nonviolent offenders. This decision follows a judge’s order for Bannon to report to prison by July 1, after his conviction for contempt of Congress, according to CNN.

Bannon’s ineligibility for a minimum-security prison camp is due to an ongoing criminal case against him in New York. The Danbury facility, where he is expected to serve his sentence, has housed violent offenders, raising concerns about his safety and security during his incarceration.

Danbury Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) houses a total of 1,065 inmates, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Approximately one-third of these inmates are sex offenders, while under 40% were convicted on drug-related charges, as reported by the News Times.

The Danbury prison has a history of housing inmates convicted of serious crimes. For instance, one male inmate, convicted of child sex abuse and threatening to kill a federal judge, was indicted again in June for sending threatening communications to a court employee, according to the New Haven Register.

In another case, a female inmate formerly incarcerated in Danbury for “murder with a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime” pleaded guilty in June after assaulting another inmate with a weapon fashioned from two razor blades and a broken pencil, as detailed in a DOJ press release.

Bannon, a prominent figure in the Trump administration, was convicted of contempt of Congress after failing to comply with a subpoena from the House committee investigating the January 6th Capitol riot. His impending imprisonment at a facility known for its violent offenders marks a significant moment in his legal battles.

As Bannon prepares to report to the Danbury facility, questions remain about his ability to navigate the challenging environment. The decision to place him in such a setting underscores the severity of his ongoing legal issues and the implications of his conviction.
