Proctor & Gamble Recalls 8.2M Bags of Laundry Detergent Due to Packaging Defect

NEW YORK (NEWSnet/AP) — Proctor & Gamble is recalling more than 8 million bags of Tide, Gain, Ace and Ariel laundry detergent packets due to a defect in the products' child-resistant packaging.

According to notices from both P&G and product-safety regulators, the outer packaging intended to prevent easy access to the liquid laundry detergent pods can split near the zipper track, posing risk to children and others who may ingest them.

So far, there have been no confirmed injuries directly tied to the defect.

During the period that the recalled products were sold, there were four reports of children accessing the laundry packets in the U.S., including three ingestion cases. Whether pods came from the recalled bags is unknown, according to Proctor & Gamble and U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

The recall involves select batches of Tide, Gain, Ace and Ariel laundry detergent manufactured September 2023 to February 2024 and sold at major retailers.

Consumers in possession of the bags are instructed to keep the products out of the reach of children and contact Cincinnati-based P&G for a refund and a child-resistant bag to store the detergent, which itself remains safe to use for laundry purposes.
