Newly Appointed Police Chief Murdered by Cartel Gunmen in Nuevo Leon, Mexico

By Gloria Ogbonna

In a distressing incident in the northeastern border state of Nuevo Leon, Mexico, a group of cartel gunmen targeted and killed the police chief of Hidalgo, Nuevo Leon.

This tragic event occurred on the second day of his tenure, amidst a concerning surge in drug-related violence and confrontations in the region.

The targeted killing unfolded on a Thursday afternoon in the city of Hidalgo, situated in the northeastern part of Nuevo Leon, northeast of Monterrey.

Lucio Juarez Trujillo, who had recently assumed the role of police chief for the municipality of Hidalgo, was driving his personal SUV when a group of assailants ambushed him, shooting him multiple times.

Law enforcement sources revealed that the attack involved at least three SUVs carrying the gunmen. Despite a prompt response from the police, Juarez Trujillo succumbed to his injuries, and the shooters managed to escape, eluding authorities during the subsequent manhunt.

Before his untimely murder, Juarez Trujillo had previously served as an officer with Tamaulipas State Police. His appointment as Public Security Secretary for Hidalgo coincided with a period of intensified turf wars among drug cartels competing for control of key drug trafficking and distribution territories within Nuevo Leon.

These territorial disputes have led to a surge in targeted assassinations and large-scale attacks on law enforcement personnel in various parts of the state.

Remarkably, despite the escalating violence, Nuevo Leon’s Governor Samuel Garcia has largely focused on attracting foreign investment and business development while overlooking the ongoing security challenges in the state.

Governor Garcia, known for his active social media presence, has refrained from making public statements or posts about the tragic murder of the police chief.
