After nearly six months of negotiations, the leader of the nationalist PVV party, Geert Wilders, announced on Tuesday that Dutch political parties have reached a final agreement on forming the incoming right-wing government. This announcement follows the PVV’s success in the recent elections and extensive coalition talks.
“We have reached an agreement,” Wilders told reporters following nearly four weeks of discussions on distributing cabinet positions among the four coalition parties.
Last month, the coalition confirmed that political outsider Dick Schoof would become the new prime minister. Schoof, 67, has an extensive background in Dutch government, having served as the senior official at the justice ministry until last month. His previous roles include leading the Dutch intelligence agency AIVD and the anti-terrorism agency NCTV, as well as heading the Dutch immigration service in the early 2000s.
The new cabinet, led by Schoof, is expected to maintain looser ties to parliament, though details on the other cabinet posts have not yet been disclosed.
