Daniel Stern’s Fight for Fair Compensation: From Home Alone to Home And Alone

Daniel Stern, renowned for his role as Marv the bumbling burglar in the timeless Christmas classic Home Alone, recently disclosed his battle for a salary increase during the sequel’s production.

Following the monumental success of the original 1990 film, which swiftly led to the greenlighting of a sequel, Stern reminisced about the studio’s initial offer of $600,000. Despite doubling his salary from the first movie, Stern learned that his co-stars had received substantially higher offers.

In his memoir, “Home And Alone,” the 66-year-old actor revealed that while Joe Pesci, his Wet Bandits counterpart Harry, was offered $2 to $3 million, leading star Macaulay Culkin secured a sequel deal worth $5 million plus 5 percent of the box office earnings.

“Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,” premiered in November 1992, following the near cancellation of the first film’s production. Stern recounted a six-month delay before receiving the $600,000 offer, which fell short of his expectations.

Refusing to settle for less, Stern negotiated with the studio upon learning of his co-star’s significantly higher compensation. Despite the studio’s subsequent offer of $800,000, Stern stood his ground, aiming for at least half of Pesci’s earnings.

After parting ways with his agent who advised him to accept the offer, Stern took matters into his own hands. Negotiations extended into the filming period, but Stern ultimately secured his desired salary and a percentage of the film’s profits.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Stern acknowledged his prideful stance, recognizing the risks of jeopardizing his involvement in the beloved franchise. Despite almost losing his role in the first film due to a scheduling conflict, Stern asserted his worth, ensuring equitable compensation for his contribution to the sequel.

In an interview preceding the release of his memoir, Stern emphasized that while monetary gain was a factor, he derived fulfillment from other aspects of his involvement in the films. He candidly admitted his regret over almost forfeiting the role, deeming it one of the most regrettable decisions in his career.

Stern’s journey from negotiating his salary to securing his place in cinematic history as Marv serves as a testament to his determination and the value of advocating for fair compensation in the entertainment industry.
