Joe Biden’s ongoing border crisis has led to a significant influx of illegal migrants in Detroit, pushing activists and community members to house them in private residences. The African Bureau for Immigration and Social Affairs, a non-governmental organization dedicated to assisting African migrants in the U.S., is spearheading this initiative. The group’s founder, Seydi Starr, expressed to the Detroit News the urgent need for a support network for these individuals, as the crisis intensifies this year.David Bowser, chief of housing solutions and support services at Detroit’s Housing and Revitalization Department, insists the city is effectively managing the influx caused by the border crisis. However, Starr disagrees, highlighting the community’s role in preventing the emergence of tent cities by offering personal accommodations.

Community members, including established migrants, have been actively involved in providing shelter, sometimes housing up to 20 people in a single home. Despite the noble intent, questions arise about the legality of these arrangements, as U.S. law typically restricts the number of individuals allowed in a single-family home.

It’s presumed that Starr’s organization compensates homeowners for housing the migrants, though details of these operations remain unclear. Funding is a growing concern for many American cities grappling with the migrant crisis. Denver Mayor Mike Johnston recently pointed out the financial strain on cities, with potential budget cuts looming to accommodate the increasing number of illegal migrants.

Johnston, along with the mayors of New York and Chicago, has called on President Biden for additional funding to cope with the surge of migrants. They seek to avoid significant budget reductions that would impact city services for residents.

Amidst these challenges, activists like Starr aim to integrate migrants into the workforce, contributing to Detroit’s population growth and labor market. Simultaneously, President Biden is seeking additional federal funds to support the accommodation of illegal migrants in various U.S. communities.
