Ryan O’Hearn drove in three runs, and Gunnar Henderson homered while scoring three runs, leading the Baltimore Orioles to a historic 5-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night. This win completed a four-game sweep at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Both O’Hearn and Henderson had three hits each, with James McCann contributing by going 2-for-3, including a home run. This series marked Baltimore’s first-ever four-game sweep of Tampa Bay on their home turf.
Orioles’ starter Corbin Burnes (7-2) pitched seven innings, allowing two unearned runs on five hits. He also recorded one walk and six strikeouts. Yennier Cano successfully navigated the eighth inning despite issuing a walk, and Craig Kimbrel secured his 15th save in the ninth.
In a remarkable turnaround from their 1-18 record against the Rays in 2021, the Orioles have gone 6-1 against their American League East rival this season.
For the Rays, Alex Jackson hit a two-run homer, and Yandy Diaz had two of the team’s five hits. Tampa Bay’s starter Ryan Pepiot (4-3) allowed four runs on nine hits over six innings, striking out nine without walking a batter.
Henderson set the tone early, launching Pepiot’s first pitch of the game for a 430-foot home run, his 21st of the season.
The second inning featured a bizarre sequence involving Orioles’ second baseman Jordan Westburg. With two outs and the bases empty, Westburg called off first baseman Ryan Mountcastle under a routine popup by Jose Caballero, only to drop the easy catch for a fielding error. Caballero then collided with Westburg while stealing second but remained in the game. Jackson capitalized with his two-run homer, his first of the year, giving the Rays a 2-1 lead.
McCann tied the game at 2-all with a leadoff solo home run in the third inning. In the fifth, O’Hearn put the Orioles ahead for good with a two-out, two-run double. He added an RBI single in the seventh to seal the victory.
