Apple Inc. (AAPL.O) revealed its highly anticipated AI strategy on Monday, introducing “Apple Intelligence” technology throughout its suite of applications and collaborating with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its devices.

Announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), the new AI features will be available with the latest operating system updates. Despite these advancements, Apple’s shares fell by 2% as investors sought more substantial AI announcements. The stock has lagged behind other Big Tech companies this year.

The new AI capabilities will enable users to summarize text and create personalized content, such as animations for birthday greetings. The ChatGPT integration will be available later this year, allowing users to access the chatbot for free without logging their information.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, introduced the ChatGPT integration, stating, “We want you to be able to use these external models without having to jump between different tools.”

Apple also enhanced Siri with generative AI technology, enabling the voice assistant to manage individual app features. Siri can now delete emails and edit pictures, functionalities that previously posed challenges due to the need for precise understanding of user intentions and app operations. Siri will also leverage ChatGPT’s capabilities, seeking user permission before querying the OpenAI service.

Emphasizing its commitment to user privacy, Apple has designed its AI with privacy “at the core,” utilizing a combination of on-device processing and cloud computing. Apple plans to use its own chips to power these AI features and introduced “Private Cloud Compute” to ensure AI can draw on larger server-based models while safeguarding user privacy.

Unlike its AI competitors targeting enterprise clients, Apple aims to make AI technology accessible to its over one billion users, most of whom are not tech experts.

iOS 18, the upcoming software for the iPhone, will offer a more customizable home screen and improved versions of in-house apps. The new software includes a “lock an app” feature for enhanced data protection, allowing users to secure specific apps.

Apple also announced that its email client will soon group messages into categorized folders such as primary, transactions, and promotions, similar to Google’s Gmail feature.

Additionally, Apple’s mixed-reality headset, Vision Pro, will be available in eight more countries, including China and Japan. The new VisionOS 2 software will utilize machine learning for natural depth photos and introduce new gestures.

At its annual developer conference in Cupertino, California, Apple showcases updates to its apps and operating systems and introduces new tools for developers. The company has long utilized AI to enhance device functionality, such as crash and fall detection on its watches, but has been less vocal about these technologies compared to Microsoft’s promotion of its early investment in OpenAI.

Microsoft surpassed Apple as the world’s largest company by market capitalization in January, and AI chip giant Nvidia (NVDA.O) briefly overtook Apple last week, highlighting a perceived shift in power within the tech industry.
