The Revival That Never Was? The Curious Case of the ‘13 Ghosts’ TV Series Delay

By: Renae Richardson

Scary is as scary does, meaning it effortlessly evokes terror. Few films have achieved this as effectively as “13 Ghosts.” It consistently ranks among the top horror movies on numerous lists. Fans of the film have longed for more spine-chilling content. Two years ago, it was announced that Dark Castle was developing a “13 Ghosts” series, with a premiere date set for July 25, 2025. As that date draws near, the pressing question is whether the announcement was merely a prank.

Thirteen Ghosts

“Thirteen 13 Ghosts” is now hailed as a classic, a creative endeavor envisioned and brought to fruition by William Castle in 1960. In the early 2000s, it became the focus of a remake. As Slashfilm highlights, Dark Castle took on this project along with “House on Haunted Hill.” While the film is now regarded as one of the most terrifying ever made, it didn’t necessarily achieve great success at the box office. In this respect, as Slashfilm notes,

“Did ‘Thirteen Ghosts’ make money at the box office? No.”

Yet, quality is often assessed by more than just profitability. Even the works of some of the most renowned artists of all time weren’t always popular, and many of those artists died in penury.

The plot of “13 Ghosts” is straightforward. It centers around the collection of some of the most fearsome ghosts known. A particular collector has successfully gathered ghosts of the dark zodiac. The Dark Zodiac, as it is noted, is

“A twisted inversion of the typical Zodiac…; the Black Zodiac represents 12 earthbound ghosts who are needed to open the Ocularis Infernum.”

These 12 ghosts are utterly terrifying and include The Broken Heart, The Hammer, The Pilgrimess, The Great Child and Dire Mother, The Torn Prince, The Angry Princess, The Bound Woman, and The Wilted Lover. There’s The Torso and The First Born Son. Two of the most fearsome are The Jackal and Juggernaut. Each comes with its foul and fearsome background stories.

While many films have been adapted and adapted again, it seemed that this one would largely be left untouched. Perhaps the one remake was sufficient, and the uninspired vote of confidence from box office dollars would keep it shelved indefinitely. Which isn’t a problem as long as the existing versions remain available.

In 2023, it was first announced that something was brewing for this IP. As Dread Central noted,

“Patrick Mediate (Primordial Pictures) and Aaron McLane (SFX Supervisor, Fear the Walking Dead) have shared an exclusive update with Dread Central announcing their partnership with Dark Castle Entertainment to develop and pitch a 13 Ghosts television series to Sony Pictures Television.”

They say no news is good news. In this case, it’s always great to get an update, even if only to get the blood pumping and the mind revving.

A Little Hope

According to the 2023 Movieweb article, the production team said,

“Every culture in the world has its ghost stories, and this reimagining of Thirteen Ghosts presents an international sampling of these supernatural tales. The ghost stories within each episode will have their own stylistic look and feel that will be explored and influenced by each individual director. This makes our ghost vignettes stand out stylistically, as they set the theme for each episode.”

Not much information followed.

Is the ‘13 Ghosts’ Series a Ghost?

This sounded incredible. Not only were hopefuls reassured, but they were also given a little more to chew on regarding what to expect. However, there was no further update. As last reported, the premiere was due this month on Paramount. But there remains no confirmation, with even a few journalistic platforms contending the information was a hoax; there is no “13 Ghosts” series.

Given the level of detail and what was reported in 2023, it seemed that the project was indeed pushing forward. It seems the momentum at some point stopped, and details became murky, really leaving waiters wondering what is truly happening. Whatever happened to the vanishing project, the hope is that someone will restoke the fires. If it is still in progress, hope leans towards more clarity as to due dates because horror enthusiasts thirst.
