Man Converts 1920s and 1960s Train Carriages Into Luxurious Retreats — Step Inside to Discover the Breathtaking Interiors

Nestled in the heart of Chattanooga’s vibrant Southside, the Hotel Chalet at the Choo Choo invites guests to step back in time and rediscover the golden era of rail travel — without sacrificing a single modern comfort.

After a meticulous $19 million restoration, this iconic destination has been reimagined as a luxurious, design-forward retreat, blending nostalgic charm with modern sophistication. At its heart lies a collection of restored Pullman train carriages from the 1920s and 1960s — now transformed into one-of-a-kind guest rooms that celebrate the romance of vintage rail travel.

“The Hotel Chalet is now ready to welcome guests, offering a contemporary take on the Golden Age of rail travel,” said Jake Lamstein, owner of Trestle Studio. “The blend of historic elements and modern amenities creates an inviting and captivating atmosphere for history enthusiasts, sophisticated travelers and adventurers.”

Where History Sleeps in Style

Each of the 25 train carriage rooms was lovingly restored to reflect its original era — with meticulous attention to detail. Designer Jenny Bukovec crafted two distinct aesthetics:

  • 1920s Victorian carriages feature pinch-pleat drapery, bentwood dining chairs and original Tiffany glass pendants, evoking the luxury and grace of early 20th-century travel.
  • 1960s midcentury carriages embrace boldness and color, with playful hues of rose, lilac and lime, French-style cantilever chairs, and custom wallpaper that nods to retro glamour.

“The hotel encapsulates the nostalgia and allure of rail travel’s heyday,” Lamstein said, “making it an ideal destination for history enthusiasts and anyone seeking a memorable and immersive experience.”

Vintage Charm, Modern Comfort

While the carriages immerse guests in the past, each room includes elevated modern amenities:

  • Italian linens
  • Smart TVs and USB charging stations
  • Toiletries by The Botanist & The Chemist

Guests staying in the chalet-style rooms — 127 across the property — can expect stylish nods to the building’s midcentury roots, with hardwood furniture, whimsical Appalachian-inspired patterns and lush terraces that offer a connection to nature.

A Courtyard That Comes Alive

The heartbeat of the Hotel Chalet is Glenn Miller Gardens, a lush courtyard inspired by French Nouveau landscaping. Visitors can unwind beside the alpine pool, gather around fire pits, or enjoy a rotating DJ lineup under warm evening lights — a true après-voyage experience.

Dine at Elsie’s Daughter
No visit is complete without a stop at Elsie’s Daughter, the on-site Appalachian bistro led by restaurateurs Chloe Wright and Ryan Smith, known for Rosecomb. The menu brings Southern soul with upscale flair — an ideal pairing for the hotel’s historic setting.

A New Era at the Choo Choo

Set on the grounds of the historic Chattanooga Choo Choo, this revitalized hotel is just steps from the city’s best dining, nightlife and cultural experiences — a place where past and present meet with grace and intention.

The Hotel Chalet also features event-ready spaces, including a 180-guest ballroom, a tented courtyard and multiple breakout rooms, making it a prime venue for weddings, retreats and corporate gatherings.
