Dev Erlich, an attorney based in New Jersey, is the proud mother behind the heartwarming clip. In an exclusive interview with The Bright Story, she said, “It was so cute and sweet. He had just come home from daycare, and you’d think they hadn’t seen each other in weeks. They were both just so excited. Skylar ran outside for a second, then came right back in like, ‘Wait! You’re home!’”

But their story isn’t just about a viral moment — it’s about a friendship that began the day Skylar came into Dev’s life.

Skylar joined the family as a puppy in 2021 and quickly claimed her place in their hearts. Now 4 years old, she’s a purebred golden retriever with the perfect blend of calm and playfulness. Sweet-natured, a little goofy and always ready for an adventure — especially if it involves water — Skylar is the kind of dog who brings peace and laughter wherever she goes.

Shalom, meanwhile, is a happy, curious toddler with a strong personality and a love for the outdoors. He adores animals — especially Skylar — and approaches the world with wide-eyed wonder and an irresistible giggle. His energy and joy are infectious, making his bond with Skylar all the more heart-melting.

“Their bond is really, really sweet,” Dev said. “They love each other and they both respect each other.” Shalom especially loves training Skylar, who’s always eager to earn a treat from her little best friend. They spend their days playing outside — chasing toys, tossing balls and just enjoying each other’s company.

One of the most touching habits they share happens when Skylar barks by the window. “We always tell her, ‘It’s okay, Skylar,’ and now whenever she barks, Shalom automatically says it too and goes to pet her to make sure she’s okay,” Dev shared. It’s the kind of gentle routine that shows just how closely bonded they really are.

Their connection is woven through daily moments — morning greetings when Shalom calls her into his room, bath time companionship, and bedtime snuggles where Skylar lies quietly by his bed as stories are read aloud.

Skylar is more than a companion — she’s a quiet guardian. Dev recalled one moment at a dog beach when another dog wandered a bit too close to Shalom. “Skylar immediately ran over, positioned herself between them and gently got the other dog to back off,” she said. “The other dog’s owner even came over and said, ‘Did you realize your dog was protecting your son?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I realized — they’re best friends.’ It was really cute.”

For Dev, the viral moment only confirmed what she already knew: their friendship is something truly special. “Skylar makes me happy every day,” she said. “So knowing she can do that for other people too really means a lot.”

And the public agreed. The video quickly racked up views and hundreds of comments. “I’ve watched this 10 times and I’m still smiling!” one user wrote.
