For most people, food and affection are simple pleasures. For Caroline Cray Quinn, they are calculated risks.
The Boston-based health care recruiter lives with mast cell activation syndrome — a rare and serious immune disorder that causes her body to overreact to harmless substances. For Caroline, that includes nearly all foods and even the possibility of a kiss.
“I have a condition called mast cell activation syndrome, which causes me to have allergic reactions to a bunch of foods. Because of this, I am on a super limited diet of hypoallergenic formula and oatmeal,” Cray told Newsflare.

Her daily meals are meticulously planned: three cups of the formula-oatmeal mix for breakfast, two for lunch, and three again at dinner. The formula is made from amino acids, which prevents her body from having to break down proteins — an act that could trigger severe allergic responses.

“The formula is vanilla flavored, thank God, otherwise this would taste like cardboard,” she jokes in one of her videos.
Diagnosed in 2017 after a single allergic reaction spiraled into multiple unexplained anaphylactic episodes, Caroline’s path to a diagnosis took nearly a year. Since then, she has battled everything from hives and vomiting to dangerously low blood pressure and swelling triggered by food, dust, mold, animal dander — even certain smells.
A Diet That Sparks Curiosity and Compassion
Caroline’s honesty about her condition and her drastically limited diet has captivated viewers on TikTok, where she shares day-in-the-life content about her eating routines and health challenges.

“How did you figure out these are the only two foods you can eat?” one intrigued commenter asked.
“This is so sad. Sometimes food is the best part of my day. Take care, love,” wrote another viewer, echoing a sentiment of empathy and admiration.
Some viewers found both comfort and guidance in her openness. One mother commented:
“Thanks for sharing the formula. I’ll have my son try it. He has MCAS and no safe foods.”
By showing her daily meals and sharing candid reflections, Caroline is not only raising awareness of a rare illness — she’s helping others feel seen.
The Rules of Romance
In a deeply personal video, Caroline explains the strict rules any romantic partner must follow before sharing a kiss:
- Avoid her six anaphylactic allergens — peanuts, tree nuts, sesame, kiwi, mustard and seafood — for at least 24 hours.
- No eating for three hours prior to kissing.
- Brush teeth thoroughly before making contact.
“Kissing boys is definitely a risk,” she shares. “It invites potential instability into my life. But so does everyday life for me.”
Though she’s experienced mild symptoms — itchiness, flushing and head rush — she manages them with emergency medication and proactive planning.
“I could completely avoid kissing and just live in a bubble when it comes to relationships,” she said. “But I choose to take little calculated risks so that I can live a full and happy life.”
Living Fully, Loving Cautiously
These rules haven’t just protected her physically — they’ve helped her emotionally.
“It immediately weeds out any guys who don’t really give a s—t about you,” she said.
Recently, Caroline introduced her boyfriend, Ryan, who fully embraces her lifestyle — even eating the same hypoallergenic formula to make intimacy safe. To her, it’s a clear sign of love.
“If they have to follow a few rules to kiss you, then they obviously care,” she said. “They’re willing to put in a good amount of effort.”
Caroline’s journey is more than a story of limitations. It’s a portrait of strength, self-advocacy and living boldly — on her own terms.
