DEAR BONNIE: There was just another full moon, and I cannot sleep. What is up with this energy? My mom always told me that people’s energy can change during a full moon, but I never asked her why, and now I regret not having asked her before she passed. Can you help me? Thanks Leslie
DEAR LESLIE: My mom used to say something similar, and it used to scare me a bit. Why would people act strangely around the time of a full moon? However, I always knew I wouldn’t sleep well, and my dreams were wild. I investigated the rationale behind the beliefs.
The full moon has long been believed to have a special influence on our energy. Many people find themselves feeling more energetic and emotionally charged during this time. This surge in energy might be due to the moon’s gravitational pull, which affects the Earth’s tides and, in turn, the water in our bodies. Some folks notice a boost in their intuition, creativity, and even a bit of restlessness. The bright moonlight can also inspire us to be more active and eager to get things done. In this regard, I can see how the full moon can affect our sleeping..
There are a few reasons why people might struggle to sleep, and the full moon is often one of them. The extra light from the full moon can mess with our natural sleep rhythms, making it harder to drift off. Plus, the heightened energy and emotions associated with the full moon can leave us feeling restless. Other common causes of sleeplessness include stress, anxiety, poor sleep habits, and medical conditions like insomnia or sleep apnea.
In most years, we get to enjoy 12 full moons, with one appearing roughly every 29.5 days. However, every now and then, we get an extra treat—a 13th full moon, known as a “blue moon.” This special moon comes around about every two to three years, adding an extra touch of magic to the calendar.
If you have crystals in your home the full moon is the perfect time to give your crystals some TLC. Placing them outside or on a windowsill where they can soak up the moonlight is a great way to cleanse and recharge them. The moon’s energy can help purify your crystals, clearing away any negative vibes they may have picked up and restoring their sparkle. You can also take this time to set intentions with your crystals by holding them and focusing on what you want to achieve. It’s such a nice tradition to get involved with if you have crystals in your home or office.
If you feel like you would like to try a full moon ceremony, there are lovely ways to honor the power and beauty of the moon. These practices can vary, but they usually include activities like meditation, setting intentions, and other rituals. Here are some popular full moon ceremonies you might enjoy:
• Full moon meditation: Find a quiet spot, either alone or with friends, and meditate under the moonlight. Focus on letting go of negative energies and welcoming positive intentions.
• Moon bathing: Spend some time outside under the full moon, letting its light wash over you and rejuvenate your mind and body.
• Crystal charging: Lay out your crystals in the moonlight to cleanse and recharge them with the moon’s energy.
• Journaling: Take a moment to reflect on your goals and intentions for the coming lunar cycle. Write down what you want to release and what you hope to bring into your life.
• Ritual Fire: Write down any negative thoughts or habits you want to let go of and safely burn the paper. This symbolizes release and transformation.
The full moon is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the natural rhythms of the universe and embrace personal growth. Whether you participate in formal ceremonies or enjoy a quiet moment of reflection, the full moon can help you find greater self-awareness and peace. I hope everyone interested in the full moon takes the time to print this column and try one of the ceremonies. They certainly cannot hurt to explore your sensitivity to the full moon.
