A Christian nurse in the United Kingdom has been suspended by Britain’s National Health Service after refusing to refer to a biologically male convicted paedophile as a woman, and subsequently speaking publicly about the disciplinary action she faced. Jennifer Melle, who worked at St Helier Hospital in Carshalton, London, was suspended last week for allegedly breaching patient confidentiality after she disclosed that she had previously been punished for not using female pronouns when referring to a male sex offender in her care.
Despite Melle claiming the patient hurled racial abuse at her and made physical threats, the Nursing and Midwifery Council reportedly deemed her a “potential risk” over her refusal to affirm the inmate’s preferred gender identity. Melle said that after she declined to use female pronouns, the prisoner, who is currently serving a sentence in a high-security prison for sexually abusing multiple boys while posing online as a teenage girl, responded: “How about I call you n*****?… Yes, black n*****!” She shared her account via Christian Concern.
Following a media interview last month in which she recounted her experience, Melle received notification from hospital officials that she was being suspended for revealing information about the case — even though she did not name the inmate publicly. She now plans to take legal action against the NHS Trust, accusing it of discrimination, harassment, and violations of her human rights.
“Ever since I expressed my Christian beliefs under extreme pressure, I have been a marked woman,” Melle stated in a press release issued by the Christian Concern charity. “Despite being the one placed at risk, I am the one being punished. I have been made to feel like a criminal.”
Melle is receiving legal support from the Christian Legal Centre, which described the case as “unprecedented.” Andrea Williams, the Centre’s chief executive, said: “This is blatant, unlawful victimisation. Jennifer’s decision to speak out about her treatment is a legally protected act under the Equality Act. The NHS has become so entrenched in transgender ideology that it is willing to side with a man brought in from prison in chains — who was openly shouting racist abuse — over a Christian nurse.”
The Centre is demanding a full apology and immediate reinstatement for Melle, arguing that prolonged investigations are often used by institutions as delay tactics to construct a narrative that justifies disciplinary action.
Public and political figures have begun to speak out in support of Melle. Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch called the situation “completely crazy,” adding, “She has my full support. It’s time the Government pulls its finger out and intervenes to make it clear no one should be punished at work for stating biological reality to paedophiles.”
Renowned author and vocal critic of transgender policies J.K. Rowling also weighed in on social media, posting: “This is obscene. The NHS is about to waste yet more taxpayers’ money by trying to vilify a dedicated nurse for knowing a man when she sees one.”
