One such moment unfolded on February 18, at St Giles Hospice in Whittington, Staffordshire, where Hannah Haynes, 29, married her partner, Joshua, in a wedding planned in less than 24 hours. It wasn’t the location or the timing that made this day unforgettable—it was the unyielding love of a daughter for her dying father, Maurice Haynes, 69, who was battling terminal tonsil cancer.
Maurice, who was diagnosed in October 2024, had been receiving care at the hospice. For Hannah, the thought of her father missing her wedding was unbearable. She knew Maurice's lifelong dream was to walk her down the aisle. In a race against time, Hannah transformed that dream into reality, proving that love, when driven by urgency and compassion, can accomplish the extraordinary.

Carers turned the hospice’s chapel into a beautiful ceremony space, adorned with bunting and candles. Against all odds, Hannah found a wedding dress on the morning of the ceremony. In a voice choked with gratitude, Hannah said: “What St Giles has done for my dad is unbelievable.” The hospice, a place often associated with final goodbyes, became a venue of new beginnings that day. “He was unsure about coming to a hospice to start with, but now he is here, he is comfortable and likes the environment he is in,” she shared. For Hannah, the setting was irrelevant compared to the presence of her father. “Having our wedding in a hospice wasn’t the norm, however, having dad there to walk down the aisle, it didn’t matter where I was getting married, so long as he was there.”
Leon Ratcliffe, interim director of clinical services at St Giles Hospice, spoke of the privilege it was to help orchestrate such a poignant moment. “It was such an honor to help create a very special moment for Maurice, Hannah, and their family,” he said. “Hannah was determined that her father would be part of her wedding day, and we were delighted to assist in making that happen. We wish Hannah and Joshua a long and happy marriage and thank them for allowing us to be a part of such a memorable occasion.”
