Hollywood actress Daryl Hannah, known for her roles in Kill Bill and Blade Runner, used her platform at the 2025 Academy Awards to express solidarity with Ukraine. While presenting the award for Best Editor, Hannah took a moment to acknowledge the ongoing struggles of the Ukrainian people.
Her appearance at the Oscars coincided with the 20th anniversary of Kill Bill Vol. 2. As she stepped onto the stage, she flashed a peace sign before calmly addressing the audience with the words, “Slava Ukraini,” a phrase that has long served as a patriotic battle cry for Ukraine’s armed forces.

According to The Kyiv Independent, “Slava Ukraini” is more than just a slogan—it is a phrase deeply embedded in Ukrainian identity, dating back over a century.
The publication explains that Ukraine’s adversaries have attempted to portray the phrase as controversial, yet it remains a powerful symbol of national pride, much like “God save the King” in the U.K. or “Vive la France” in France.
“The phrase can be traced back over a century and is tied to Ukrainians’ efforts to build an independent state, most notably in the face of enduring Russian aggression,” The Kyiv Independent reported.
It also drew parallels to “Žyvie Bielaruś!,” a historical slogan now used by the Belarusian democratic opposition as they continue to resist the authoritarian rule of Alexander Lukashenko, a leader long supported by Russia.
Hannah’s statement was met with applause from the audience, further highlighting the global attention on Ukraine’s resilience and the ongoing conflict in the region.
