Delta Air Lines has announced it will offer passengers who were aboard Flight 4819, which crash-landed at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday, $30,000 each. This offer comes after the plane, arriving from Minneapolis, burst into flames upon landing and flipped upside down on the runway. The airline has stated that the payment offer “has no strings attached and does not affect rights,” according to a Delta spokesperson.
Flight 4819, a CRJ-900 aircraft, was carrying 76 passengers and four crew members when it made its emergency landing at around 2:15 p.m. on February 19. The incident left the plane overturned and smoking, with the passengers still trapped in their seats as emergency crews rushed to the scene. Despite the terrifying ordeal, no fatalities were reported. However, 21 passengers sustained injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals. Thankfully, none of the injuries were considered life-threatening. As of Wednesday morning, Delta reported that all but one of the injured passengers had been released from the hospital.
Although the weather at the time was clear, the airport had recently experienced severe weather conditions, including nearly two feet of snow from prior storms. Wind gusts of up to 40 mph were also reported. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, with assistance from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.
If all 76 passengers claim the $30,000 offer, Delta will pay nearly $2.3 million in total. The airline has yet to clarify the exact process for passengers to claim their compensation.
