Judge Tano Tijerina, the top elected official in Webb County, Texas, revealed during an interview on Fox & Friends that he has officially left the Democratic Party to join the Republican Party. Tijerina attributed his decision to the Democratic Party’s move to the left, stating that it no longer aligns with the values he holds dear.

“I’ve always been a conservative, and the radicalization of the National Democrats pushed me away a long time ago,” Tijerina said during the interview. “For that reason, I’m proud to announce that today I will be leaving the Democratic Party and joining the Republican Party.”

Watch:

Growing Disconnect Between National and Local Democrats

Tijerina’s announcement comes after President-elect Donald Trump won 14 of 18 counties along the U.S.-Mexico border in the 2024 presidential election, a region that had been a Democratic stronghold for generations. Trump’s focus on border security and other conservative policies resonated with voters in South Texas, where traditional Democratic values differ significantly from those at the national level.

“Our Democrats here are not the same as national Democrats,” Tijerina explained. “We’re very conservative for the most part. Everyone started to understand and realize what was going on these last three to four years, especially with border security.”

Border Security and Local Concerns

As a county judge in a border region, Tijerina has faced firsthand the challenges associated with immigration and border security. He noted that financial and security burdens played a significant role in his decision to leave the Democratic Party.

“We need to have border security,” Tijerina said. “It was a huge effect on us, not only financially but burden-wise, to secure our borders.”

Tijerina also expressed concern about policies that threaten the oil and gas industry, the influence of progressive movements, and the erosion of traditional values. “From the woke movement to boys playing in girls’ sports, these are things that do not align with my moral compass,” he added.

Implications for South Texas Politics

Tijerina’s departure reflects a broader shift in South Texas politics, where many voters have embraced Republican policies. The Texas Tribune highlighted that Trump’s success in the region marked a dramatic change, with many counties flipping Republican after decades of Democratic dominance.

As Tijerina prepares to align his political future with the Republican Party, his decision underscores a growing divide within the Democratic Party and signals potential challenges for Democrats seeking to retain influence in South Texas.
