Brayan Bello delivered a masterful performance, going a career-high eight innings and leading the Boston Red Sox to a 3-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night at Fenway Park.
Bello (12-6), who had only reached the eighth inning once in his previous 63 major league starts, struck out nine batters while allowing just two hits and one walk. His dominant outing ensured the Red Sox’s second consecutive win following a four-game losing streak.
Kenley Jansen closed out the game with a flawless ninth inning to secure his 25th save of the season.
The only run support Bello needed came from Wilyer Abreu, who drove in a run with a single in the first inning. Tyler O’Neill provided additional insurance with a two-run homer in the eighth, which proved crucial for the Red Sox.
Masataka Yoshida had a standout night at the plate, going 3-for-4 and contributing to the offensive efforts of the Red Sox.
Bello set the tone early, striking out two batters in a clean first inning. Jarren Duran got Boston’s offense rolling with a leadoff single, advancing to second on a groundout before scoring on Abreu’s two-out single to left.
Toronto’s Chris Bassitt (9-13) pitched effectively but was ultimately the tough-luck loser. He struck out nine batters over 6 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on five hits and one walk. Despite Bassitt’s solid performance, he was unable to overcome the Red Sox’s timely hitting.
In the second inning, Bello navigated around a double by Addison Barger, and in the third, Red Sox shortstop Ceddanne Rafaela made a crucial defensive play. Rafaela fielded Ernie Clement’s ground ball up the middle, spinning and throwing to first base for a bang-bang out, which helped Bello maintain his shutout.
Bello continued to impress with two strikeouts in the fourth and benefited from a 6-4-3 double play in the fifth to erase a leadoff walk.
Bassitt was particularly effective between the second and sixth innings, retiring 13 consecutive batters. In the seventh, Yoshida’s leadoff single and a subsequent hit by Connor Wong put pressure on Toronto. However, Bassitt and reliever Brendon Little escaped the jam, keeping the game 1-0.
In the eighth inning, Boston’s David Hamilton reached base on a fielding error by catcher Alejandro Kirk on a soft bunt. O’Neill then delivered a towering two-run homer that sailed over the Green Monster in left-center, providing a crucial cushion for the Red Sox.
Bello’s stellar outing and timely hitting from his teammates secured a decisive 3-0 victory for the Red Sox, who continue to build momentum in their pursuit of postseason aspirations.
