A political action committee (PAC) created and funded by billionaire Elon Musk is currently under investigation by the Michigan secretary of state’s office for its efforts to collect voter data. The America PAC, which supports former president Donald Trump, has come under scrutiny for its practices.
In July, Musk reportedly stated he would contribute $45 million a month to the PAC throughout the election period. However, he has since distanced himself from Trump and retracted his pledge.
The PAC has been gathering voter information through its website, which features a form for voter registration. Despite this, some links on the website are reportedly broken, preventing the completion of the registration process.
A spokesperson for the Michigan secretary of state’s office expressed concerns, stating, “Every citizen should know exactly how their personal information is being used by PACs, especially if an entity is claiming it will help people register to vote in Michigan or any other state.”
The Department is examining the PAC’s activities to ascertain whether any state laws have been violated. Potential violations will be referred to the Michigan Attorney General’s office for further action.
Although it remains uncertain if any laws have been broken, a former U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan told CNBC, “I am not aware of any laws being broken” by the PAC’s activities.
An insider disclosed to CNBC that while the America PAC website was once fully operational, it is currently not functional. A new website is expected to launch in the coming weeks.
