The Four Corner Activity:
Steps:
- For an interesting multiple-choice question that many students are confused about, or a complex concept/idea that different students have varied understandings of
- The teacher could write down the 4 different choices given on the whiteboard (make sure all students can see that clearly), marking the answers as A, B, C, and D
- Then, the teacher could take out 4 pieces of paper and mark them as A, B, C, and D too
- Next, the teacher could post the 4 pieces of paper at the 4 corners of the classroom, and ask his/her students to get out of their seats and move to the location (in the classroom) that best fits their choice
- Good thing to remind the students that they can stand in the middle ground if they have mixed ideas or are uncertain between 2 or 3 or even all 4 answers
- After all students have made a decision, ask some of them to share their thoughts on why they chose the place(s) they were at (remember to thank your students for sharing their thoughts~)
Note:
- When students are moving around, make sure there are no objects in the classroom that could physically hurt them by chance: especially if this is a class of younger-aged students
- If there are more than 4 answers, feel free to make this a five-corner or n-corner activity! (just make sure the classroom is large enough)
