5 DIY survival projects

If you are a fan of survival skills and DIY projects, you might enjoy these five ideas that can help you prepare for various scenarios. Whether you need to start a fire, purify water, signal for help, or build a shelter, these projects are easy to make with common household items and some basic tools.

1. Fire Starter: You can make a simple but effective fire starter by dipping cotton balls in petroleum jelly and storing them in a ziplock bag. These will ignite quickly and burn for several minutes, giving you enough time to build a fire with dry wood and tinder. You can follow this video:  Build Your Own Fire Starter

2. Water Filter: You can make a water filter by cutting off the bottom of a plastic bottle and filling it with layers of gravel, sand, and activated charcoal (which you can get from aquarium stores or online). Poke some holes in the bottle cap and attach it to the top. Then, place the bottle upside down over a container and pour dirty water through it. The filter will remove most of the impurities and bacteria, but you should still boil the water before drinking it. You can learn how to make the below video:  $10 DIY Berkey Water Filter

3. Signal Mirror: You can make a signal mirror by using a CD or DVD and some duct tape. Cut a small hole in the center of the disc and cover the shiny side with duct tape, leaving the hole exposed. Then, hold the disc near your eye and aim the hole at the sun. You can use the reflection to signal for help by flashing it in the direction of planes, boats, or people.

4. Paracord Bracelet: You can make a paracord bracelet by weaving together several feet of paracord (which you can buy online or at outdoor stores) using a cobra knot or other simple knot. Paracord is a strong and versatile material that can be used for many purposes, such as tying things together, making traps, repairing gear, or even as a tourniquet in case of injury. 5. Tarp Shelter: You can make a tarp shelter by using a large tarp (or any waterproof material) and some rope or cord. First, find two trees that are about 10 feet apart and tie the rope between them at about chest height. Then, drape the tarp over the rope and secure the corners to the ground with stakes or rocks. You can adjust the height and angle of the tarp to suit your needs and preferences. This shelter will provide you with some protection from rain, wind, and sun.You can check out this video to learn how to do it: Solo Winter Camping in Heavy Snow - Overnight in Tarp Shelter
