The director of the US Secret Service is stepping down from her job, according to an email she sent to staff, following the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump. “I take full responsibility for the security lapse,” Kimberly Cheatle said in the email to staff on July 23. Her resignation comes a day after appeared before a congressional committee and was berated by hours by both Democrats and Republicans for the security failures.

House Speaker Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries officially announced a bipartisan House task force to investigate the attempted assassination of Trump. “In response to bipartisan demands for answers, we are announcing a House Task Force made up of seven Republicans and six Democrats to thoroughly investigate the matter,” the two leaders said in a statement.

President Joe Biden will address the nation from the Oval Office on Wednesday evening on his decision to drop his 2024 Democratic reelection bid. Biden posted on X that he would speak “on what lies ahead” and how he will “finish the job for the American people.” He will speak at 8 p.m. ET.
