Discovering Hamlet

In 1963 BBCTV flew BAFTA award winning director Philip Saville out to Copenhagen to check whether an all location production of Shakespeare’s play Hamlet was feasible.
On the parapets of the massive Kronborg Castle at Elinore, with its cannons facing the raging Baltic Sea he felt it in his bones that it was possible. Just how, needed some of Hamlet’s madness.
Together with a young cast including Christopher Plummer, Robert Shaw, Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland, Steven Berkoff and many more. Little did they realise how groundbreaking it was going to be.
Playing the Prince of Denmark is like climbing Mt Everest – calling on brilliance, great stamina and huge vocal resources. Like a giant magnet the play draws on International Directors and Stars to the role.
Seeking revenge on the man who murdered his father and married his mother sends Hamlet mad.....Or is he?
In the forthcoming film we will show how Hamlet has soaked up change and custom over the last 400 years and remains today ever more powerful and why the great and the good want a shot at acting a man unable to make up his mind.
