The US sent the largest aircraft carrier in the world to the Persian Gulf to bolster its forces in the Middle East, The New York Times reported.

The USS Gerald R. Ford and its escort ships had previously been deployed in the Caribbean and, according to four anonymous US officials, were informed of their new destination . 

Notably, this comes after reports that the USS George H.W. Bush would deploy to the region. The Wall Street Journal quoted an anonymous source as claiming that the Bush was performing training exercises off the Virginia coast and “could potentially expedite those exercises.” The Ford’s aircraft was involved in the January 3 operation in Venezuela that resulted in President Nicolas Maduro’s abduction. Originally scheduled to return in early March, the strike group’s deployment has now been extended. The latest delay will put Ford’s planned dry dock period in Virginia, set for major repairs and upgrades, at risk, according to the report. Earlier this week, President Donald Trump had said he was considering sending a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East if a deal is not reached with Iran. The first aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln and several guided-missile destroyers arrived in the Middle East in January. Trump said on Thursday the United States has to make a deal with Iran and suggested an agreement could be struck over the next month. "We have to make a deal, otherwise it's going to be very traumatic, very traumatic," Trump told reporters. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he hoped that Trump was creating the conditions to reach a deal with Iran that would avoid military action. In this case   European Union's aviation safety regulator recommended the bloc's airlines stay out of Iran's airspace until March 31, saying it was extending an earlier warning. "The presence and possible use of a wide range of weapons and air-defence systems, combined with unpredictable state responses ... creates a high risk to civil flights operating at all altitudes and flight levels," the European Union Aviation Safety Agency said in a bulletin. World powers and regional states fear a breakdown in negotiations between Iran and the United States could ignite a conflict that could spill over to the rest of the oil-producing region. 
Iran has vowed a harsh response to any strike and has cautioned neighbouring Gulf Arab countries that host U.S. bases that they could be in the firing line if they were involved in an attack.
