Karen Bass Advances to November Runoff as Challenger Spencer Pratt Gains Momentum in Los Angeles Mayor’s Race

By Gloria Ogbonna

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass secured a place in the November runoff election on Tuesday, keeping her bid for a second term alive as voters weighed the future leadership of California’s largest city. While Bass emerged as the first confirmed candidate to advance, the race remains highly competitive, with Republican challenger Spencer Pratt positioning himself as a surprising and increasingly influential contender.

The election comes at a critical moment for Los Angeles, a city still grappling with major challenges that have dominated public debate throughout Bass’s tenure. Among the most pressing issues facing voters are the aftermath of the devastating Palisades Fire, considered one of the most destructive wildfires in Los Angeles history, and the city’s ongoing homelessness crisis, which continues to affect neighborhoods across the region.

Speaking to enthusiastic supporters after learning she had secured a spot in the runoff, Bass expressed gratitude to those who remained loyal throughout the campaign.

“I appreciate you for standing with me when others doubted me, because you know who I am,” Bass told the crowd. “I have devoted my entire life to serving the city that I love, where I was born, and I’m going to continue to do that all the way to victory in November.”

The Democratic mayor emphasized her commitment to addressing the city’s challenges and pledged to continue working on issues ranging from housing affordability and public safety to economic recovery and disaster preparedness.

While Bass’s advancement is now official, uncertainty remains over who will ultimately face her in the general election. Early election returns showed Republican Spencer Pratt running in second place, although final results were still being tabulated.

Pratt, best known to many Americans as a former reality television personality from the hit MTV series The Hills, has transformed himself into an outspoken political voice. His campaign has focused heavily on criticism of the city’s leadership, particularly regarding the wildfire response, deteriorating infrastructure, and the growing homelessness problem.

Addressing reporters while meeting with supporters at a local restaurant, Pratt made it clear that he would welcome a direct showdown with Bass in November.

“This is not a candidate that I’m too concerned about,” Pratt said confidently.

Pratt explained that his decision to enter politics stemmed from frustration with what he views as a failure of city leadership.

“I got in this because as a citizen, I felt like my city failed — myself, my neighbors, my family,” Pratt said. “Mayor Bass has allowed the city to be covered in potholes. We don’t have sidewalks. We don’t have lights.”

The Republican challenger has attempted to position himself as a voice for frustrated residents who feel overlooked by City Hall. Throughout his campaign, he has repeatedly argued that basic city services have deteriorated and that elected officials have failed to address quality-of-life concerns affecting everyday Angelenos.

“I’m an Angeleno who said, ‘Enough is enough,’” Pratt declared, a message that has resonated with a segment of voters seeking change in city leadership.

California's election is about more than individual candidates—it's a referendum on whether Californians believe the status quo is working.

One factor that has helped Pratt connect with voters is his personal experience during the catastrophic Palisades Fire of 2025. Pratt and his wife, reality television star Heidi Montag, lost their home in the wildfire, a life-changing event that pushed him into public activism and eventually into the mayoral race.

Mayor Bass has accused Pratt of attempting to capitalize on the tragedy and “exploiting the grief” of fire victims for political purposes. However, Pratt’s supporters argue that such criticism overlooks the fact that he was himself directly impacted by the disaster and experienced the devastation firsthand.

Political observers note that Pratt’s personal story has helped him gain credibility among residents who feel that government officials failed to adequately protect communities during the wildfire emergency. His campaign has increasingly centered on accountability, disaster preparedness, and restoring confidence in local government.

This is my parents’ house. This is why I’m running. This is coming for your home. It’s coming for your industry. If not by fire, then by blight, addicts, fraud, and the slow rot created by corrupt politicians like Karen Bass. Wake up and VOTE. https://t.co/atLnnM9thy pic.twitter.com/61QCK7HzEu

The Los Angeles mayoral race is just one of several closely watched contests taking place across California. Voters are also deciding primary races for governor, statewide offices, Los Angeles County sheriff, and several key congressional seats that could influence the state’s political landscape in the years ahead.

As election officials continue counting ballots, Bass remains the only candidate officially guaranteed a place in the November runoff. Authorities have not yet announced when final results will determine which challenger will earn the opportunity to face the incumbent mayor in what is expected to be a hard-fought and highly scrutinized campaign.

With concerns over homelessness, public safety, infrastructure, disaster recovery, and the overall direction of Los Angeles dominating voter discussions, the November election is shaping up to be one of the most consequential mayoral contests in recent city history.
