Just a few barely noticeable Photoshop edits and… voila… Trump looks like… well… actually he still very much looks like Trump…
I am being serious, because the one people who should know better, seriously think that he is literally Hitler. I am of course talking about Germans.
This an article from my substack, but I wanna specifically show it to the Falun Gong adherents here on GJW (let's face it, this is basically Youtube for people who believe in Falun Gong). And don't get me wrong, I respect Falun Gong. And even though it's supposed to be non-political and even though I just said I don't like Trump, I know a lot of you people totally love, support and adore him very much and that's your business.
But there is a problem. Namely that a lot of other people really think he is basically Hitler, so if you fanatically support him without explaining things, it makes you look really bad - especially in the eyes of (rational) Europeans - because basically most Europeans and especially Germans really think of Trump as a horribly racist Nazi and so the only Trump supporters in Germany and most of Europe ARE actual racists and Nazis (and you should not team up with them). But let me explain:
Many of my American friends living in Germany don’t dare talk about politics even if they are against Trump. Because in the eyes of their German friends they can never be against Trump enough and so they always risk being seen as Trump supporters if they talk about politics, so they learned not to do that at all.
They have to. Because they risk loosing their job and all their friends and possibly their visa. And it’s not like they could just get a job at a company run by Trump supporters, because there ARE no Trump supporters in Germany (except of course Neo-Nazis, but they wouldn’t exactly be employing foreigners - well except for the Chinese spies that keep managing to get employed by extreme right political parties).
But I am digressing and getting ahead of myself, so let me explain.
The cover of the Trump focused issue of Stern - THE biggest news magazine in all of Europe. There are countless similar covers like this, but I chose this one as a rather representative and above all self-explanatory example of what pretty much any and all coverage on Trump looks like in Germany.
Most Germans speak very poor English and many Germans in the eastern part of the country still don’t speak English at all (instead we learned Russian in school). And along with learning Russian we also learned about our class enemy - the US. So we learned to think of the US as an evil exploiting capitalist country full of racism and discrimination and poverty and racial segregation (to this day).
Beyond those stereotypes, most Germans have almost no concept of the US, much less US politics. Also, in West Germany we have hundreds of political parties who all share some amount of actual political power and in the East we had… well we had ONE party and that’s it. So we don’t understand how a 2 party State like the US works and we have no concept of it.
There are a bunch of memes based on this poll that replace Trump with all kinds of other people, but this is the original image and the original poll - so yes, 41% of Germans really think Trump is the greatest threat to world peace and only 8% think that’s Putin. Though admittedly the poll is already 5 years old. So hopefully by now Putin would rank a little higher, but probably mainly because they think he is in bed with Trump o_O
We don’t understand that Americans as a whole are very peace loving, open, diverse and democratic overall. Because basically half of Americans support Republicans and basically the other half support Democrats with basically little to nothing in between and we don’t understand that your media likewise supports either one or the other and that because of that one half of your media and population always ends up demonizing the other half and portraying them as horrible authoritarians and as the most evil enemies of democracy and labeling them Nazis.
When in reality neither side is nowhere even close to being Nazis and unlike us Germans, you don’t even really have Nazis as a significant political force. Well, you have the American Nazi Party, but that’s like 5 guys playing dress up with no political power at all. And of course there was the case of Martin Sellner, the (in-)famous Austrian Neo-Nazi leader who WANTED to live in the US and set up a movement there, but was swiftly deported precisely thanks to Trump's policy of deporting extremists.
Also, unlike Americans, Germans had never even heard of Trump before he became President. They don’t know that he used to be a prominent and well liked media personality - loved by all the US media and by both liberals and conservatives and that it was only when he ran for President in 2016 that the Democrat controlled media started demonizing him - but that’s the most powerful media in the US, so German journalists weren’t even really aware of there being conservative media that portrays Trump differently.
So they just copy pasted whatever CNN and MSNBC put out without questioning it and more importantly without really understanding any of the politics behind it. The message however was clear, Trump is the most racist dictator the world over ever since Hitler - that Germans CAN pick up on. And that’s when they went from copy pasting to embellishing because now they REALLY portrayed him as literally Hitler.
Trump calling holocaust deniers accomplices of evil and saying racism is evil. Two of the many, many Trump speeches that you will never, ever see on German TV and that would completely shock Germans if they ever saw them.
I remember German media making daily claims about Trump such as that he is deporting AOC, all Muslims, all his critics, all Democrats and anyone who isn’t white and that in the meantime he is sending the national guard into all cities to enforce racial segregation.
Many Americans became Trump supporters after listening to Trump’s speeches and realizing he didn’t actually say any of what the left winged media were claiming and that on the contrary he has very clearly spoken out against racism and national socialism countless times.
But Germans and many Europeans can't verify what Trump actually said, as their English and their knowledge about American politics is insufficient to understand what Trump is saying in his speeches, so they can’t really fact check what German media is telling them about Trump, so German media was able to get away with telling them whatever they wanted, as most people had no realistic way to verify it (at least before there was AI - but actually AI isn’t exactly reliable either).
So, bottom line, turns out Americans from both parties are actually really nice, open minded, tolerant, diverse and freedom loving people - yes even Trump supporters aren’t Nazis - with ONE exception and that is German Trump supporters. I learned to stay far away from German Trump supporters. Cause keep in mind Germans really regard Trump as an actual Nazi, so the only Trump supporters there are in Germany, are actual Nazis. And now you understand why you can’t be an actual Trump supporter in Germany.
