Zelensky Pushes for Peace Talks Before Winter as Ukraine Seeks Stronger Position Against Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signaled a renewed push for diplomatic efforts to end the war with Russia, saying Kyiv aims to advance peace negotiations before the onset of winter while capitalizing on what he described as an improved strategic position on the battlefield.

In an interview broadcast on Sunday, Zelensky said the coming months could provide a crucial opportunity to pursue a diplomatic path toward ending the conflict, emphasizing that Ukraine’s military situation has strengthened compared with previous stages of the war.

Efforts to move toward a peace agreement have largely stalled in recent months despite mediation attempts by the United States. Diplomatic momentum has slowed as Washington’s attention has increasingly shifted toward tensions and conflict in the Middle East, leaving negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow without significant progress.

According to Zelensky, Russia’s military campaign has lost some of its earlier momentum, while Ukraine has expanded its operations deep inside Russian territory. Ukrainian forces have increasingly relied on medium- and long-range drone and missile strikes targeting strategic infrastructure, particularly facilities linked to Russia’s oil and energy sector, which remain vital to funding Moscow’s war effort.

The Ukrainian leader argued that changes on the battlefield have altered the balance of the conflict. He said Russia began losing the initiative toward the end of 2025, creating a window in which diplomatic engagement could become more realistic.

Zelensky stressed that any successful negotiations would require sustained international pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin. He called on Western governments to strengthen, rather than ease, sanctions against Moscow, arguing that economic pressure remains one of the most effective tools for influencing Russian decision-making.

He suggested that future negotiations could take several forms, including talks facilitated by European nations or direct bilateral discussions between Ukraine and Russia. However, he maintained that meaningful diplomacy would only be possible if Moscow faced increasing political and economic costs for continuing the war.

His remarks come as Ukrainian military officials express growing confidence that Russian forces are facing mounting challenges after years of intensive combat. Ukrainian commanders have recently argued that Moscow’s army is showing signs of fatigue and that its ability to achieve major breakthroughs on the front lines has diminished.

Senior military figures in Kyiv believe the next six months could be critical. They contend that Ukraine has an opportunity to improve its battlefield position, regain momentum in key sectors, and strengthen its leverage ahead of any eventual peace negotiations.

At the same time, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine’s security needs remain urgent. He renewed calls for additional air-defense support from the United States, warning that the country continues to face regular missile and drone attacks targeting cities, energy infrastructure, and civilian facilities.

While European nations are discussing long-term defense projects, including advanced missile-defense capabilities, Zelensky said Ukraine requires immediate assistance until such systems become operational. He argued that American support remains indispensable in protecting Ukrainian airspace and limiting the impact of Russian aerial attacks.

The Ukrainian president also highlighted Kyiv’s growing role as a global leader in drone warfare. Over more than five years of conflict, Ukraine has developed extensive expertise in countering and deploying drones, transforming battlefield tactics and attracting international interest in its technology.

Zelensky revealed that Ukraine is pursuing expanded defense cooperation with foreign partners, including agreements related to drone development and production. He said Kyiv has already reached drone-related arrangements with several countries in Europe and the Middle East and is preparing a major new agreement with the European Union.

In addition, Ukraine hopes to deepen technological cooperation with the United States. Zelensky expressed optimism that American partners would support joint drone initiatives, allowing both sides to benefit from Ukraine’s battlefield experience and rapidly evolving defense technologies.

As the war enters another critical phase, Ukrainian leaders are attempting to balance military operations with diplomatic outreach. Kyiv’s strategy appears focused on strengthening its position both on the battlefield and at the negotiating table, while seeking greater international support to maintain pressure on Moscow and create conditions for eventual peace talks before winter arrives.
