VALHALLA – Westchester County marked the 24th anniversary of the end of rescue and recovery operations at Ground Zero on Friday with its annual flower spray ceremony at The Rising, the county’s 9/11 First Responders Memorial in Valhalla.
The observance honored first responders, recovery workers, and volunteers who participated in efforts following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. This year’s ceremony also recognized the recent death of Harrison firefighter Kenneth J. Fusco, who died from illnesses linked to his work at Ground Zero.
Fusco served with the Harrison Fire Department for 45 years and took part in rescue and recovery operations at the World Trade Center site after the attacks. County Executive Ken Jenkins said Fusco’s death serves as a reminder that the effects of 9/11 continue to impact first responders and their families more than two decades later.
“This year’s remembrance carries even deeper meaning as we honor the life and service of Firefighter Fusco, whose passing reminds us that the effects of 9/11 are still being felt by so many families and communities across our region,” Jenkins said. “We will continue to honor those we lost, support those still suffering from 9/11-related illnesses and ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten.”
Dedicated in 2006, The Rising memorial honors Westchester residents who died in the attacks and first responders suffering from 9/11-related illnesses. County officials said the annual ceremony reflects on the lasting impact of the attacks and the ongoing need to support those affected.
