NEWBURGH – City residents in Newburgh continued to pressure the city council Tuesday night to terminate its contract for the police department to monitor city streets with the Flock brand camera system.
Several council members agreed, saying the company can share its images with federal authorities in these difficult times.
Councilwoman Tamika Stewart said the technology is necessary, but the city needs to secure a different company.
“If we are absent of that technology, we are putting ourselves in a very vulnerable position and that is in terms of public safety, so we have to figure out how to balance what the technology is, get rid of the company because the company is disastrous,” she said.
Councilman Omari Shakur wants to terminate the contract with a 30-day notice.
But, to cancel in mid-contract would cost the city just under $400,000, something the lawmakers agreed would be wasteful spending.
