NEWBURGH – After months of debate, the Newburgh City Council voted Tuesday night to create a charter review commission.
Not all members favor forming the commission now; others support giving voters the opportunity to decide in the November election, but in the event, the majority vote to form the commission now.
All seven members have agreed that the current city manager form of governor is not the best.
Councilwoman Ramona Monteverde said the current system is not working as she said was evident by recently resigned Manager Todd Venning’s leadership.
“My hands were tied because I was not loyal to Todd. My hands were tied. I couldn’t get anything done as a council member in Ward 2. We need to change the system or review it,” she said.
Councilman Robert McLymore supports the review, but questions what he called “the rush” to get it done without further educating the residents and letting them vote on it.
