On May 20, the European Parliament plenary session passed a “Recommendation on the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly,” opposing any unilateral use of force or coercion to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, and supporting Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations. In response, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed sincere welcome and affirmation.

According to the Central News Agency, the European Parliament adopted the “Recommendation on the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly,” citing a 2024 resolution titled “Misinterpretation of UN resolution 2758 by the People’s Republic of China and its continuous military provocations around Taiwan” It emphasized that UNGA Resolution 2758 does not determine Taiwan’s sovereignty and does not mention Taiwan, reiterating support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations.

The resolution stresses that disputes should be managed through diplomatic means to avoid escalation in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea, and opposes any unilateral actions that change the status quo through coercion or force. It also calls for deepened cooperation with like-minded partners to strengthen stability and security in the Taiwan Strait region, and to enhance deterrence against coercion or military action.

It further upholds the UN Charter principle prohibiting the use of force, and urges the United Nations to allow individuals holding Taiwanese passports—including civil society activists, public representatives, and journalists—to enter UN premises to participate in activities.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release on the afternoon of the 21st stating that the resolution is a recommendation from the European Parliament to the EU Council, the European Commission, and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. In the press release, Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung expressed sincere welcome and affirmation of the European Parliament’s continued concrete support for Taiwan’s international participation and for maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
