Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin published a post-election analysis after months of pressure from party strategists and officials demanding answers following the 2024 campaign losses.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin released a long-delayed internal review of the party’s 2024 election performance Thursday after mounting criticism from Democratic strategists and operatives who had demanded public disclosure of the findings.

The 192-page report, completed in December and authored by Democratic consultant Paul Rivera, offers a broad critique of the party’s electoral strategy and messaging failures, particularly among working-class and regional voters outside traditional Democratic strongholds.

According to the report, Democrats need “a renewed focus on the voters of Middle America and the South, who have come to believe they are not included in the Democratic vision of a stronger and more dynamic America for everyone.”

The analysis argues that millions of voters struggling with economic instability, healthcare access, job losses, and deteriorating infrastructure increasingly felt disconnected from the party.

“Millions of Americans are suffering from poor access to healthcare, manufacturing and job losses, and a failing infrastructure, yet continue to be persuaded to vote against their best interests because they do not see themselves reflected in the America of the Democratic Party,” the report states.

The document also points to declining support for state Democratic parties, inadequate training efforts, changing voter registration patterns, and what it describes as “a persistent inability or unwillingness to listen to all voters.”

The report’s release comes during a period of internal instability for the DNC as Martin faces growing dissatisfaction among party officials and operatives less than two years into his leadership tenure.

In a Substack post accompanying publication of the review, Martin defended his earlier decision to delay its release while also acknowledging criticism over how the matter was handled.

“When I received the report late last year, it wasn’t ready for primetime. Not even close,” Martin wrote.

“And because no source material was provided, fixing it would have meant starting over, from the beginning — every conversation, every interview, every data set,” he continued.

Martin said he initially believed revisiting the 2024 election would distract from future campaigns and party rebuilding efforts.

“In December, I announced we would shelve this report, and I meant what I said at the time — that I didn’t think dwelling on 2024 or looking backwards so late in the game helped us to win elections,” Martin wrote. “And at the end of the day, winning elections is my job.”

“In short, I didn’t want to create a distraction,” he added. “Ironically, in doing so, I ended up creating an even bigger distraction. And for that, I sincerely apologize.”

Reaction from some Democratic strategists remained sharply critical following the release.

Democratic strategist Steve Schale criticized party leadership on social media over the delay.

“Why not say this in 2024, or bring in more people to finish it, instead of turning this into the dumbest media cycle for 7-8 months?” Schale wrote.

The report’s publication comes as Democrats continue reassessing voter losses in key battleground states and attempting to rebuild support among working-class, rural, and culturally moderate voters ahead of upcoming election cycles.
