Ukrainian drones struck another major Russian oil refinery overnight, igniting a massive fire and sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky in what appeared to be the latest phase of Kyiv’s widening long-range campaign against Russia’s critical energy infrastructure.

Ukrainian President said Thursday that the attack targeted the Syzran oil refinery, located more than 800 kilometers inside Russian territory. Zelenskyy shared footage on social media showing flames and heavy smoke rising from the facility after the strike.

The video could not be independently verified, and Russian authorities did not immediately provide full details regarding damage to the refinery. However, Russia’s Astra news outlet reported that the facility, operated by , had been hit by Ukrainian drones.

confirmed that two people were killed in drone attacks in the city of Syzran but stopped short of directly acknowledging damage to the refinery itself.

The latest strike is part of an increasingly aggressive Ukrainian strategy aimed at targeting Russian oil facilities, storage depots and industrial infrastructure linked to Moscow’s war economy. Ukrainian officials say the attacks are intended to reduce Russia’s ability to finance its military operations while also bringing the war closer to the Russian population after years of bombardment across Ukraine.

Zelenskyy indicated that the campaign was proceeding according to plan, saying Ukraine’s long-range operations throughout May had largely met their objectives. He said Russian oil refineries and related infrastructure remained priority targets because of their importance to government revenues and military logistics.

Attacks on Russian energy infrastructure have intensified dramatically in recent months, with Ukrainian drones now routinely reaching locations more than 1,500 kilometers from the border. The strikes have exposed weaknesses in Russia’s air defense systems and raised pressure on the government of President as ordinary Russians increasingly experience the direct consequences of the conflict.

The latest refinery strike came just one day after another Ukrainian drone attack reportedly targeted a separate Russian oil facility, underscoring the growing frequency and range of Kyiv’s operations.

Ukraine has spent years rapidly developing domestic drone and missile technology as it sought to reduce dependence on foreign military assistance. What began as an urgent wartime effort to compensate for limited resources has evolved into a sophisticated domestic weapons industry capable of carrying out coordinated long-range attacks deep inside Russian territory.

Military analysts say Ukraine’s expanding strike capability is not only damaging Russia economically but also influencing battlefield conditions along the front lines.

The said Ukraine has recently achieved its most significant battlefield gains since 2024, partly due to its intensified long-range strike campaign against Russian logistics and supply infrastructure.

According to the Washington-based research organization, Ukraine’s sustained attacks on Russian military and industrial targets have disrupted Moscow’s ability to conduct offensive operations across multiple sectors of the battlefield and may have contributed to recent Ukrainian advances.

Ukraine’s Defense Minister said Kyiv has gradually regained the initiative in some combat zones while slowing Russian advances along key sections of the front.

Fedorov said one factor behind Ukraine’s improving battlefield position has been Russia’s difficulty accessing the satellite network, which has played a crucial role in drone coordination and communications during the war.

According to Fedorov, Russia has struggled to fully replace the service after restrictions limited access, giving Ukrainian forces a significant tactical advantage in drone warfare.

The Starlink system, operated by and founded by , relies on thousands of low-orbit satellites to provide internet connectivity across the globe.

Fedorov said medium-sized drones have become one of Ukraine’s most important technological advantages on the battlefield. He also claimed Ukrainian forces have doubled their interception rate against incoming Russian drones over the past four months as Kyiv improves its electronic warfare and air defense capabilities.

Ukraine is additionally preparing revisions to military contracts and soldier compensation programs as the country seeks to sustain recruitment and maintain combat readiness during the prolonged war.

Meanwhile, Russia reported another wave of large-scale Ukrainian drone attacks overnight. The Russian Defense Ministry said its air defenses intercepted 121 Ukrainian drones between late Wednesday and early Thursday across multiple regions.

In Russia’s Belgorod region near the Ukrainian border, Governor said eight people were wounded by Ukrainian drone strikes.

Russia has simultaneously intensified its own drone campaign against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Throughout the conflict, Russian drones and missiles have repeatedly targeted residential areas, power facilities and civilian infrastructure across Ukraine.

According to United Nations estimates, more than 15,000 civilians have been killed since the war began, with drone and missile attacks continuing to inflict heavy casualties.

Ukraine’s air force said Thursday that it intercepted 109 of the 116 drones launched overnight by Russian forces. Emergency officials reported that one civilian was killed and at least six others were wounded in attacks affecting northern, southern and eastern regions of the country.

Separately, Russia and neighboring completed the final stage of joint nuclear military exercises that included the movement of intercontinental ballistic missile systems, nuclear-capable submarines and strategic aircraft.

Belarusian President inspected Russian Iskander missile systems during the drills, which began earlier this week.

The exercises come as Ukrainian drone strikes increasingly penetrate deep into Russian territory, challenging Kremlin efforts to portray the war as a distant conflict that does not directly affect life inside Russia.
