SUFFERN – President Donald Trump has called Congressman Mike Lawler (R-NY-17) “Mr. SALT,” a nod to the role he played in securing a legislative deal as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act last year to raise the SALT cap from $10,000 to $40,000.

So, it’s fitting that Trump’s visit to Rockland County on Friday will highlight, according to a White House spokesperson, “affordability and tax cuts, including Trump’s work on the state and local tax (SALT).” SALT is a federal tax provision that allows taxpayers to deduct taxes already paid to state and local governments from their federally taxable income, helping reduce the amount they owe the IRS.

“This Friday, President Trump will visit the great State of New York to highlight his strong record of making life more affordable for working families,” White House spokesperson Liz Huston said. “The President will also draw a sharp contrast with Democrats in Congress, who unanimously voted against the Working Families Tax Cuts, which included lifting the SALT cap, eliminating taxes on Social Security, overtime, and tips, and enhancing the Child Tax Credit.”

The Trump-Lawler event will be held at 3 p.m. at Eugene Levy Fieldhouse at Rockland Community College. The president will campaign in one of the most competitive House districts in the country. Lawler is seeking reelection to a third term in Congress in November.

Five Democrats are seeking the nomination with June’s primary approaching. The 17th District, which includes all of Rockland and Putnam counties, as well as parts of Westchester and Dutchess counties, is considered one of the most competitive congressional districts in the nation.

Lawler was one of just three incumbent House Republicans, alongside Don Bacon and Brian Fitzpatrick, to win reelection in districts carried by former Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024.
