Most Americans start their mornings the same way: a glass of water, maybe two, before coffee kicks in. It seems like the healthy thing to do. But according to a functional medicine physician, that well-intentioned habit may be doing very little—and possibly some harm.

"Plain water is not enough to rehydrate your body at the cellular level," says a functional medicine physician. "You need specific electrolytes, specific minerals, so that the water you drink gets absorbed at the cellular level and actually hydrates your body."

The Hydration Myth Hiding in Plain Sight

Most people judge their hydration by a single signal: urine color. Pale yellow urine after eight glasses of water feels like proof the system is working. The physician says that logic misses the point entirely.

"This plain water is not getting absorbed in your blood at all," he explains. "It's going through your gut, and your kidneys are overworking to get rid of this extra water from your body."

In his clinical practice, the physician found a troubling pattern. Patients were drinking eight to ten glasses of water a day, yet their lab work consistently showed two things: dehydration at the cellular level and elevated inflammation markers.
