Alex Soros announced Wednesday that the Open Society Foundations will direct $30 million toward organizations focused on combating antisemitism and anti-Muslim discrimination worldwide.

In a video statement shared online, Soros said the initiative was shaped in part by his family background and personal experiences.

“As the son of a Holocaust survivor and a Jew, I’m acutely aware of the dangers of antisemitism,” Soros said in remarks posted in an X video. “I’m also proudly married to a Muslim-American. Discrimination and hate are not abstract concepts to me or my family, they’re deeply personal and have been persistent throughout our lives.”

The funding initiative will support organizations and advocacy groups working on issues related to antisemitism, anti-Muslim bias, and religious discrimination, according to Soros’ announcement.

Open Society Foundations, originally established by billionaire financier George Soros, has long funded political, legal, media, and social initiatives around the world involving democracy promotion, civil liberties, migration policy, criminal justice reform, and anti-discrimination campaigns.

The latest announcement generated immediate reaction online, with supporters describing the funding as a response to rising religious tensions and hate incidents, while critics questioned how the money may ultimately be used and whether some initiatives could overlap with broader efforts to regulate speech online.

The announcement also renewed public discussion surrounding George Soros’ wartime experiences in Nazi-occupied Hungary. Critics referenced past interviews and commentary involving Soros’ childhood during World War II and his survival under a false identity arranged during the German occupation of Hungary.

Attention also focused on Alex Soros’ marriage to Huma Abedin, the former senior adviser to Hillary Clinton and longtime Democratic political figure. Abedin was previously married to former Congressman Anthony Weiner.

Open Society Foundations has not yet publicly released a full breakdown detailing which organizations will receive funding or how the $30 million initiative will be distributed geographically.
