President Donald Trump publicly criticized Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett on Sunday after both joined a ruling against his administration’s use of emergency tariff powers.

In a lengthy post on Truth Social, Trump said the justices had harmed the United States by siding with the court’s February decision limiting presidential authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

“I ‘Love’ Justice Neil Gorsuch! He’s a really smart and good man, but he voted against me, and our Country, on Tariffs, a devastating move,” Trump wrote.

“I have, likewise, always liked and respected Amy Coney Barrett, but the same thing with her,” he added.

The Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not grant a president broad authority to impose sweeping tariffs through emergency declarations.

The ruling represented a major setback to Trump’s trade agenda and his efforts to use emergency executive powers to restructure U.S. trade relationships and impose economic penalties on foreign countries.

Trump argued Sunday that the decision would carry severe financial consequences for the United States.

“This Supreme Court Tariff catastrophe” would force the country to return “159 Billion Dollars” to foreign nations, companies and trading partners, Trump claimed.

The president said the court could have prevented the financial impact with what he described as a simple clarification allowing previously collected tariff revenue to remain with the United States.

Trump also used the statement to criticize what he characterized as a pattern among Republican-appointed justices seeking to demonstrate political independence after joining the court.

“Democrat Justices always remain true to the people that honored them for that very special Nomination,” Trump wrote. “Republican Justices often go out of their way to oppose me, because they want to show how ‘independent’ or, ‘above it all,’ they are.”

The president contrasted the court ruling with his 2024 election victory, pointing to his performance in the Electoral College, swing states and nationwide voting totals.

“I selected people to help our Country, not to hurt it,” Trump wrote.

Trump additionally warned that future Supreme Court rulings involving birthright citizenship could further strain the country economically and politically.

He described birthright citizenship as “unsustainable, unsafe, and incredibly costly,” arguing that another adverse ruling from the court could compound the effects of the tariff decision.

“I don’t want loyalty, but I do want and expect it for our Country,” Trump said in the post.

The president concluded by warning that repeated court decisions of similar scale could damage national stability.

“Well, maybe Neil, and Amy, just had a really bad day, but our Country can only handle so many decisions of that magnitude before it breaks down, and cracks!!!” Trump wrote.
