Trump Rejects Iran’s Latest Peace Proposal as Tensions Persist in Strait of Hormuz

Donald Trump said on May 10 that he has rejected Iran’s latest response to a U.S.-backed peace proposal aimed at ending the conflict between the two countries.

“I have just read the response from Iran’s so-called ‘Representatives.’ I don’t like it — TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

The statement came hours after Iran submitted its official reply to a proposed agreement designed to permanently end the war that began on Feb. 28.

The White House did not immediately provide additional comments regarding Trump’s remarks.

Iran Pushes Focus on Ceasefire and Shipping Security

According to Iran’s state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Tehran wants negotiations to focus first on ending military operations across the region before broader issues such as Iran’s nuclear program are addressed.

Iranian state television reported that the regime’s proposal centers on halting hostilities, ending attacks involving Lebanon, and guaranteeing shipping security in the Persian Gulf.

One of the most contentious issues remains the status of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy corridors.

Iranian state media claimed the strait has remained under Iranian control since the early stages of the war.

According to the reports, Iran indicated it may be willing to reopen the waterway fully if the conflict permanently ends and the United States lifts sanctions and naval restrictions.

IRNA stated that the first phase of negotiations should focus on shipping access and sanctions relief, while signaling Iran’s willingness to discuss its nuclear program during later stages of talks with Washington.

Ceasefire Brokered by Pakistan

Iranian media also stated that Pakistan helped broker the current ceasefire between Iran and the United States, which reportedly halted nearly 40 days of fighting.

Despite the truce, Trump sharply criticized Iran in another Truth Social post on Sunday.

“Iran has been playing games with the United States, and the rest of the World, for 47 years (DELAY, DELAY, DELAY!),” Trump wrote.

He also accused Iran of supporting attacks against Americans and suppressing domestic protests over several decades.

“They will be laughing no longer!” Trump added.

Strait of Hormuz Activity Signals Possible Easing

The latest developments followed reports that a Qatari liquefied natural gas tanker successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday for the first time since the war began.

Shipping data from LSEG showed the vessel was headed toward Pakistan.

The successful transit is being viewed by analysts as a possible indication that Iran may be allowing limited shipping access through the strait, potentially signaling early diplomatic progress or a temporary reduction in tensions.

The Strait of Hormuz carries roughly 25 percent of global seaborne oil trade, making it one of the most strategically important energy routes in the world.

Britain and France Increase Military Presence

Amid ongoing tensions, the United Kingdom announced Saturday that it would deploy the HMS Dragon to the Strait of Hormuz.

The warship had previously been stationed in the Eastern Mediterranean earlier this year.

Its deployment follows France sending a carrier strike group to the Red Sea as Britain and France coordinate efforts to protect commercial shipping routes in the region.

Meanwhile, the Kuwait military announced Sunday that it had detected hostile drones in its airspace.

Saud Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi said Kuwaiti armed forces identified several hostile drones at dawn and responded according to established defense procedures.

The United States and Iran have maintained an uneasy ceasefire since April 7, while U.S. naval restrictions on Iranian ports have remained in place since April 13.
