President Donald Trump has indicated that a potential breakthrough in tensions between the United States and Iran may be within reach, announcing a temporary pause to “Project Freedom,” a U.S. initiative designed to escort commercial vessels through the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that while the U.S.-imposed blockade in the region would “remain in full force and effect,” Project Freedom — which focused on facilitating the movement of ships through the narrow and often volatile waterway — would be paused briefly to allow negotiations to continue.
“Based on the request of Pakistan and other Countries, the tremendous Military Success that we have had during the Campaign against the Country of Iran and, additionally, the fact that Great Progress has been made toward a Complete and Final Agreement with Representatives of Iran, we have mutually agreed that, while the Blockade will remain in full force and effect, Project Freedom (The Movement of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz) will be paused for a short period of time to see whether or not the Agreement can be finalized and signed,” Trump wrote.
The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, handles a significant percentage of global oil shipments. In recent weeks, heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran led to shipping disruptions, with vessels reportedly delayed or restricted amid security concerns. Project Freedom was launched as a response, aiming to guide and protect commercial ships navigating the contested waters.
According to Trump, multiple nations not directly involved in the conflict reached out to Washington seeking assistance in ensuring the safe passage of their vessels.
“Countries from all over the World,” Trump said in a separate statement on Sunday, “which were not involved in the conflict, have asked if we could help free up their Ships, which are locked up in the Strait of Hormuz.”
“For the good of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States,” he added, “we have told these Countries that we will guide their Ships safely out of these restricted Waterways, so that they can freely and ably get on with their business.”
The president framed the pause in Project Freedom as a diplomatic gesture, signaling that meaningful progress has been made toward what he described as a “Complete and Final Agreement” with Iranian representatives. While specific details of the potential agreement have not been disclosed, Trump suggested that recent military operations had strengthened the U.S. negotiating position.
However, just days earlier, Trump struck a more skeptical tone. On Friday, he said he was “not satisfied” with an Iranian proposal aimed at ending the conflict. Reports indicated that he pointed to internal divisions within Iran’s leadership as a significant obstacle to reaching a lasting resolution.
Analysts note that any agreement would need to address a range of issues, including maritime security, regional stability, and Iran’s broader military posture. The temporary pause of Project Freedom suggests that U.S. officials believe a diplomatic resolution may be achievable in the near term, though the continued enforcement of the blockade underscores ongoing pressure on Tehran.
For now, global markets and international observers are closely watching developments, as stability in the Strait of Hormuz remains vital to energy supplies and global trade. Whether the anticipated “Final Agreement” materializes could determine not only the trajectory of U.S.-Iran relations, but also the broader security landscape across the Middle East.
