A journey from hospital work to entrepreneurship

In the heart of Middletown, Tasha Crump has transformed years of medical experience into a business rooted in both expertise and compassion. With more than 20 years in maternal-fetal sonography, her decision to open her own studio was driven by both professional confidence and personal need.

“I’ve been doing ultrasound for 20 plus years, and I’ve always been working for someone else,” Crump said. “I’m always away from home… and there was a time I’m like, I want to open my own.”

Her vision grew beyond elective imaging. Today, she also provides diagnostic services in collaboration with physicians. “I perform the scans, the doctor reads them, writes a report… so I am a part of a medical team,” she explained.

Crump credits her time at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital for shaping her skills. “Being at Columbia 100 percent shaped and molded me… I’ve attained the best skills and knowledge,” she said.

Understanding the technology: medical vs. emotional experience

At her studio, Crump helps families navigate the difference between diagnostic and elective ultrasounds. “Diagnostic is for the purpose of getting information… to see if anything is abnormal,” she said. “This here is elective… they choose to come in and get pictures.”

While medical scans focus on health, 3D/4D imaging offers something more personal. Families can see their baby’s face, movements, and expressions—sometimes even recording the baby’s heartbeat inside keepsake items.

“It’s a whole different experience here,” Crump said. “It’s warm, it’s welcoming… it’s not your doctor’s office.”

Building trust through care and connection

Crump’s approach is shaped by both her professional background and her experience as a mother. She emphasizes patience, listening, and emotional support.

“You got to give [expecting mothers] a little bit more… more attention, more listening,” she said. “Sometimes they feel unheard.”

That care often leads to deep relationships. One client visited her 19 times during pregnancy. “We really bonded… so much that we consider each other family,” Crump said. “I’ve gone to the baby’s first birthday… I go to baby showers.”

She also supports families through difficult moments. “The tears go from scared and sad to happy and joy when they see the heartbeat,” she said. “I hug and I cry with the patient… I know what it’s like.”

When expertise makes a life-saving difference

Beyond emotional support, Crump’s medical training has helped identify serious conditions. She recalls cases involving abnormal blood flow and high-risk complications.

“I told her, you need to go see your doctor ASAP… they admitted her and delivered the baby,” she said. “The baby could have died in utero.”

She also encounters complex and heartbreaking cases, including miscarriages and severe fetal abnormalities. Still, she emphasizes the importance of information and early detection.

“We’re in a time of information… people want to know,” she said. “It’s preparing you for delivery and what comes next.”

Giving back and looking ahead

Since opening in 2019, Crump has built strong ties with the local community. “I have received a huge support from the community,” she said. Word of mouth and online visibility have helped her reach families across Orange, Sullivan, and Westchester counties.

She also makes accessibility a priority. After noticing that many teenage mothers could not afford services, she created lower-cost options. “It’s not all about money,” she said. “No one person is going to get a higher quality service than the next.”

Crump is now preparing to move to a new location at 157 Dolson Avenue, with plans for a grand opening in late May. The expansion will allow her to grow the business and better serve clients.

Looking ahead, she hopes to deepen her community impact through events and support programs. “I want to be able to have a space where everyone can come… and get something out of it,” she said. “It’s not about money.”

For Crump, what began as a career opportunity has become something more meaningful. “I just fell in love with it,” she said. “I feel like it was my calling.”
