Report: U.S. Secretly Alerted Iran Ahead of ‘Project Freedom’ Mission

American officials said a warning was delivered to Tehran before launching a naval effort to reopen a key global shipping route, even as attacks continued in the region.

The Trump administration communicated advance notice to Iran prior to initiating a U.S.-led operation aimed at restoring maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, according to reporting from Axios.

A senior U.S. official conveyed the plan to Iranian counterparts on Sunday, urging non-interference as American forces prepared to begin what President Donald Trump has called “Project Freedom.” The mission is intended to guide commercial vessels safely through one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.

Despite the advance notice, Iranian forces carried out multiple attacks targeting U.S. naval assets, commercial shipping, and sites in the United Arab Emirates, underscoring ongoing instability in the region.

The Strait of Hormuz, which typically handles roughly one-fifth of global oil shipments, has seen severe disruption since earlier escalations this year. According to the BBC, the situation has left thousands of mariners and more than 1,500 vessels unable to transit the waterway.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the United States is working through both public and private channels to prevent further escalation while carrying out the mission.

“We are communicating both overtly and quietly to the Iranians to allow this defensive operation to take place on behalf of the world,” Hegseth said.

Officials described recent Iranian actions—including missile launches, drone activity, and small boat operations—as limited, though persistent. Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine said the incidents remain “below the threshold of restarting major combat operations.”

“Right now, the ceasefire holds,” Hegseth said, noting that some disruption was anticipated as efforts began to reopen the passage.

U.S. Central Command reported early mixed results from the operation. Two American-flagged vessels successfully completed transit on the first day, while no ships passed through the following day. Officials said additional transits are expected, though some shipping companies remain cautious.

Analysts cited by the BBC noted that while the U.S. has deployed significant military resources—including naval destroyers, aircraft, and personnel—the absence of a clearly defined escort coordination structure has contributed to hesitation among commercial operators.

The administration has framed the effort as both a strategic and humanitarian initiative focused on safeguarding global trade and energy flows.

“We would urge Iran to be prudent in the actions they take,” Hegseth said.
